in the soviet union of 1980s, there was a slang phrase among the teens, "шнурки в стакане" which roughly translates to "shoelaces in a drinking glass", now, maybe guess what it means? wrong! the correct answer is "parents at home", asking someone if the shoelaces are in the glass meant "are your parents home?", now, do not ask me of the origin of this slang, because I don't know

I'm usually okay at getting the logic of slang from recent decades...but wtf where the teens on that they'd theoretically put shoelaces in drinking glasses to signify it's NOT okay to diddle at their parent's house that day. Was it like leaving shoes out the front door? Were shoelaces or the shoes themselves usually a gift from parental figures? Was putting various shit in drinking glasses a whole other decipherable language to learn? Was it because you'd usually strip the shoelaces off of someone first? Were aglets anti-sexual in nature, or quite the opposite??? WAS IT TO GET UNDER SOVIET UNION CENSORS??? Did it mean the horny drink was dirtied by the work shoes of your hardworking parents like a rug?? I need to hear accounts from 80s soviet teens who used this slang. I wanna hear them cringe at their own thesaurus as they struggle to explain such a niche and unheard of phrase.

Here’s a fun fact, back in Georgian England soldiers from the navy would hang around pubs, wait for people to get close to blackout drunk and drag them outside, have them join the navy and then have them drink until they actually black out, then drag them onto a ship to serve for 10 years (or until they die) This is because Britain needed sailors to defend their overseas empire and they couldn’t find enough people willing to join so they just straight up kidnapped them instead

These phrases might sound silly or nonsensical today, but they had their own charm. For example, terms like "gigglemug," used for someone who’s always smiling, or "butter upon bacon," which described something overly fancy or excessive, really capture the feel of old times. The documentary dives into how these expressions reflected the mindset and culture of the time and how, if we brought them back today, they could totally shake things up. These old slang terms, often cheeky or humorous, show how people throughout history loved to play with language and enjoy everyday banter.❣❣

I have actually been in similar situations with communication because there are parts of the US that have wildly different dialects. You have to explain to them that they have to cut out the slang and only use the words that have a direct meaning to talk which means that all communication is purely utilitarian. Trust me when I say that this has resulted in some comical moments. I still remember explaining what I needed them to do to effectively communicate with me and they had to slow down their talk to make sure to use zero slang. They said they felt like they were talking like some well educated and smug uppity type.

I don't know whether to be disturpressed by his combitment or disappointed by Sisyphus Stockholming his rock. potentially problematic vocab: billy (goat): throat (genuine Cockey rhyming slang) combitment: commitment to the bit disturpressed: disturbed but impressed Sisyphus Stockholming his rock: continuing to do something one way because you have been doing it too long to stop now (gambler's fallacy), alternatively: liking a chore after becoming accustomed to it.

Ah, fond memories of days long past. I remember when I first got called a racial slur. An old Asian woman mistakenly thought I was a Mexican and called me a stupid dago for cutting her in line at Costco. Once I got my hands on a thesaurus man I was pissed.

😮but...the D slur is for Italians!
@TheDanishGuyReviewsАй бұрын
@@roringusanda2837I thought so too, but I had a little search, and it's also for Spanish-speakers, although less used than against Italians.

Why would she call you an Italian if she thought she was a Mexican?
@swayback7375Ай бұрын
@@benn454cuz they’re all the same to her… Spanish, Italian, does it matter? They are “other” to her

In line with this video, it would be super cool if you made another weird trend in history video or something about eccentric weirdos throughout history. I'm sure you have a lot of ideas you're working on, so I'm just adding to the chorus of requests.

Been hanging for a episode & absolutely F#⃣c*⃣3⃣n loved it. 👍🤣 The cultural identity reference is so bloody true; as an Aussie myself, I can safely say I attest to it being adopted as our native speech.😂😝 The second I heard "voraciously vivify vexatiously" echo through my ears, I immediately imaged V's intro speech to Evey. V: But to whom, may I ask, am I speaking? E: I'm Evey. V: Evey? E. V. Of course you are. E: What does that mean? V: It means that I, like God, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence.

In Australia we use mystery bag to mean a meat pie made with ingredients of suspicious origin. I assume as much of our slang originated as British underworld and street slang it must’ve originally been “bag of mystery”.
