The history of the BAPS Hindu mandir began in1997 during Pramukh Swami Maharaj's visit tothe Middle East. Pramukh Swami Maharaj visiteda desert in Sharjah whereenvisioned a mandirin Abu Dhabi that would bring "countries, cultures,and religions closer together."[16][17]
In August 2015, the UAE government announcedthe decision to provide land for building a Hindumandir in Abu Dhabi.[18l[19] Sheikh Mohammedbin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of AbuDhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of theUAE Armed Forces, gifted the land for themandir.120l Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed AlNahyan gifted 13.5 acres for the temple and 13.5acres for parking. 17]
On 10 February 2018, BAPS representatives metSheikh Mohamed and the Indian Prime Ministerin the Presidential Palace. 21 A memorandum ofunderstanding was signed by India and the UAE inthe presence of the entire royal family and over250 local leaders. 22 Prime Minister Modiexpressed that the mandir "will be a holy placewhere humanity and harmony will unite". [23] Thefirst stone consecration (transl, shila pujan) forthe mandir took place on 11 February 2018.124]
