Plantic garlic for an early summer crop.
Wild boar caus a lot of damage on the farm, but we Havest winter squash. beans, peppers and our first pomegranates in the vegetable garden.
We need your help with ideas and suggestions to keep these destructive animals away from our garden, before it's too late.
Garlic Confit Recipe
About 6 bulbs garlic (we used the little cloves left over from planting)
2 or 3 sprigs of Thyme or Rosemary
2 pieces of lemon peel from 1 lemon,
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
Enough olive oil to cover the cloves
Preheat the oven to 130C/110C fan ( 230 / 260F fan)
Separate all the cloves and peel.
Place the garlic cloves, a generous amount of salt (1 teaspoon) and the thyme or rosemary in an ovenproof dish and cover with the olive oil.
Make sure the garlic is fully submerged in the olive oil so it does not burn.
Roast for 2 hours.
The oil will bubble gently while it cooks.
Allow to cool, then store the garlic with the oil in an airtight container or jar in the fridge.
It will keep for at least a month.
How to use
We used some on the toasted bread shown on the table to make a delicious garlic bread.
Another evening we swirled some into creamy mashed potato, dotted the potatoes with butter, grated parmesan on top and grilled it for 10 minutes until golden brown.
Thank you
Meraid and Dan

Thanks for sharing yet another video. As usual ur farm/garden look lovely. I enjoy watching your activities maintaining your land and enjoying ur produce. As far as the boars go, peeing on an area is not an effective repellent. Ppl resort to electric fencing mostly. However liking one of those trail cams to a speaker that reproduces gun firing or and dogs barking and human voices, has proven effective . They mostly avoid human presence.PS- lovely pomegranates!

@NearbyVeggies Maybe. That is a good explanation . Besides, during covid lockdown, there was no hunting. For sure, that increased their numbers. I say this, albeit i hate hunting and fishing; anything that preys on nature without a major reason, such as feeding oneself. I find hunting and fishing revulsive. To me, anyhow. To others, i can not say. Try to pool at the loud sounds of shooting n dogs and ppl talking. If u can find a way to activate a recording every time ur trail cam identifies boars. All other research i did sounded less promising. Especially during rain season. BTW how was the dinner and concert? Hope u guys enjoyed it!

beside unrine, Hair cutting say from a barber shop, scattered around where the boar come onto the property will carry the human scent and can stand some rain before it is washed away by rain.. Electic Fencing is often used but that can get expensive, solar charged fencing atleast does not leave you with constant energy bills. And as a last effort perhaps you could welcome hunters to the property foe a weekend. Apparently the meat is sought after for it's flavour

Keep in mind that the barber shops throw away what they cut. with so many different scents perhaps in small mesh bags scattered around, the Boars will sense a large human group in the area. Male urine or preditor unrine on something rather than on the ground will take a long time to wash away. Good luck@@NearbyVeggies

Hi we had a similar problem with the Boar destroying my veg garden garden they entered from one corner under the fence of the property. This could be totally mad but someone told me to put those six litre water bottles you buy in the supermarkets half full with water laying on their side.. It actually seamed to work. as they did not enter the property where the bottles were after that. I tried the pee.. it didn't work. Good luck

Garlic powder if boars don't like it. It might be the ammonia smell that the boars avoid, if so there's quite a few ways to create ammonia. I'm not all that familiar with wild board, but I believe they go by scent, so something strong smelling might help.

In my aunt small village, near Viseu, people kind of surrendered to the boars 'plague' and decided to have a different approach: they would leave food for the boars in the forest to keep them there and for what I heard it worked all right up to the middle of summer... And bleach on the ground

Wild boars are sensitive to scent and sound/noise. According to some Dutch websites anyway. So you might keep them away by sprinkling human hairs around (a new haircut for Meraid😉), hanging plastic bags at the perimeter making nasty sounds in the wind, or plastic flags of bright and reflective colors. Or, make bacon yourself as some people suggested☺️.

I was wondering how long your magical boar-free period would last! We put our veggies in high, metal-sided raised beds, which helps, but would be prohibitive for the amount of veg you are growing (although maybe would help for those closest to their path.) Last summer a local wine grower told us that a way to deter them from destroying the ripening grapes was to soak string in cheap perfume and hang the strings around where the boars enter the vine area. We tried this, but were too late setting it up and they had already done a lot of damage. So... not sure how much it helped! But it is an idea.

Hello you two! OMG those porcini I huge. That is good harvesting. Wild boar... Are they good for eating? BTW can you hunt them (or other animals) in Portugal? Well, I do not know for boars, but I remember my uncle on the farm in Québec when I was a kid. He would leave an old dirty sweaty jacket on a low branch or post, rain or shine and move it around, wearing it on occasions. Cheers, a

Your videos are always relaxing but also inspiring! I have been a vegetarian for many years, and I don't even kill snails, but I'd be asking around the village if anyone has a hunting license. Boars have become a problem in many places here, and now there are too many and they are really hungry (deer too). They have started to go into towns more and more and people are being injured. Wolves were hunted to extinction in Japan and boar have no natural predators now the old-timers don't hunt. A friendlier, short term solution might be to ask a neighbor with a male dog to go walking in your woods, or borrow a doggo and walk him yourself. A male that will mark his territory. I'm guessing boars would stay away from dog smell. If the dog goes potty in the woods, it will last longer than a No. 1 and won't wash away in the rain. Electric stock wire with a solar panel is the next step, but will cost, and you'll have to be careful of your neighbor's goats (and him!).

I don't know anything about farming, but I watch I Farm We Farm in Cavan, he is a cattle farmer. He uses a moveable wire that is attached to a battery which deters the cows from breaking through.

Javelina (with the Spanish "j" sound) are a problem in Texas. State Parks and Wildlife suggest making sure fruit is picked up off the ground. You might try " "peg" holes under fences to avoid the need for javelina to create more holes. It is said that Javelina will generally use existing openings rather than creating new ones." Javelina, like armadillos, are grub eaters, hence the digging of ground. You can try placing chicken wire slightly under ground with bulbs beneath as they do like many bulbs, and, I would think, things like potatoes and other root crops. Keep open ground between the woods and your garden as they prefer the cover of woods. And finally these words of advice, "javelina can be very troublesome to landowners when they become habituated to homes and human activities. They often sleep in caves, and cave like areas, and seem to find the crawl spaces under homes attractive. They may cause significant damage to yards and sprinkler systems because of their habit of rooting for food." You might try planting fruit trees in the forest so that they have less reason to come into your garden area.

It's unfortunate that you're vegetarian because there has to be some kind of equilibrium in nature. I suppose you need wolves or to call a hunter or get a hunting license yourself.
@NearbyVeggies

Only one of us is vegetarian. I asked some hunters what they are hunting and they said rabbits and pheasants. Nobody seems to be hunting boar which might be why there are so many. Although I had a lovely wild boar meal at Museo d’Azeite recently 😋
