Like my sister said, we saw this incarnation of AC/DC as being a poor man's Hush. This AC/DC came from the George Young and Harry Vanda production world at Alberts Productions in Sydney. The call of the day was to produce pop singles that teens would buy. Countdown was barely a consideration when this song came out, because the show was still new and didn't have the clout that it would a year later or so. I remember them doing this on Countdown, and I remember this video getting played on shows like GTK and National Sound Unlimited. George Young was the older brother of Angus and Malcolm and an ex-member of The Easybeats (Friday On My Mind). He and another Easybeat, Harry Vanda, would write and produce big hits in Australia, including John Paul Young's ''Love is In Th Air''. Try their own studio project, Flash And The Pan (Hey Saint Peter, Down Among The Dead Men, Waiting For A Train, Walking In The Rain). If you're curious, check out Easybeats' Friday On My Mind and Good Times (the latter being the INXS/Jimmy Barnes hit). Cheers, Hayley

I remember them doing this song on Countdown. It was a moderate hit in Australia at the time. If AC/DC didn't continue, my memory of this wouldn't be as fresh as it is today. Dave Evans was a good singer, and showman. He went on to a band called Rabbit, who were fairly popular in the Australian rock scene. They didn't score major hits, but they did do Countdown a fair bit. AC/DC (with Dave Evans) and Rabbit were sort of seen by us Countdown kids as a poor man's Hush (Hush being a popular Aussie Glam-Rock group at the time). When Bon Scott took over AC/DC vocals, the band rocketed and they made Countdown pretty exciting. I recommend ''Baby Please Don't Go'' (be sure it's their appearance on Countdown).

This film-clip was shot at the Last Picture Show venue out in Cronulla, Sydney. I used to go to this venue to see the Dave Evans' fronted AC/DC, as well as, Sherbet, Hush, Finch and a surf-prog-rock group called Farm (the singer would shave off all his long blonde hair, and the band would change name to Midnight Oil, and the rest is history)... This song was a part of my youth growing up in Sydney. The Disc Jockey at our local youth centre would play the song along with Sherbet's ''Slipstream'' and Hush's ''C'mon, We're Taking Over''. It's a good Glam-Rock song written by a band that were still in their teens, and was aimed towards the teenage market at the time. Nothing more, nothing less. In Australia, AC/DC were on the Alberts Production label, which housed producers George Young and Harry Vanda. If you read up on them, you'll see how AC/DC began like this... They had to start somewhere and this isn't a bad start. It's a kids song for kids.. Get over it you stuck-up AC/DC fans.

Rob, I was wondering if you ever saw a group called Sekret Sekret live. They were a post-punk Velvet Undergroundy kinda group around 1980? I used to see them back in the day, but cannot find anybody that actually remembers them.

@@kaitlynbatt_ Not only did I see the group Live, but I also knew them and did some work for them. David Virgin was the singer, and the guitarist was Danny Rumour (aka Daniel John Atkins) - he'd find success with The Cruel Sea. What period were you seeing these groups? Did you ever go to the Strawberry Hills out in Surry Hills? That's where Sekret Sekret played. Do Re Mi also did their early gigs there.

@@Robbo766 I began going to gigs in 1978 and I slowed down around the early 2000's (??). I used to see Sekret Sekret at the Strawberry Hills around 1981. I'm glad you know who they are, because I was beginning to think that anybody that remembers them had moved out of Sydney or has since died. Very cool that you worked for them too! I also saw early Do Re Mi gigs (when the hell are the Haniers going to do ''man overboard'' ffs?), Surfside 6, Matt Finish, The Proteens, The Naturals, The Eyes, J.M.M., Men At Work, Flowers, The Laughing Clowns, Jimmy & The Boys, The Boys Next Door (and Birthday Party) and a very early version of Models. @@kaitlynbatt_ We would have crossed paths! I was seeing Sekret Sekret at the Strawberry around that time too. I also saw all the groups you've mentioned. ALL OF THEM! I love that you remember The Eyes! They were terrible on record, but a killer live group. Another band I really liked were The Innocents from Tasmania. They had a great single called ''Sooner Or Later'', and why that song failed to chart is beyond my understanding. I think Gillian and her Countdown mates must have gotten lazy that month, because ''Sooner Or Later'' was a smash hit that never happened. The band were on Countdown playing a bona fide classic, and those Countdown kids did NOTHING with it! Unbelievable! I can sort of understand Countdown kids bypassing The Scientists, but not The Innocents. The Aliens managed to chart, but not The Innocents. I agree Kaitlyn. The Haniers are leaving Do Re Mi to hang for too long.

@@Robbo766 Well Robbo, if you remember a lanky girl with big brown eyes and an awkward presence, that was me. Ha, ha. I used to see The Eyes play around. Absolute wankers, but very entertaining.. I liked The Innocents at the time. To be honest, I don't see a bona fide classic in ''Sooner Or Later''. I always saw that as pandering to Countdown. The Aliens were horrible. I couldn't stand that band! lol I hated ''Follow That Girl'', and it made me cringe when The Aliens and The Scientists were performing on Countdown back to back. The Aliens had nothing on The Scientists, and seeing The Scientists do ''Last Night'' on Countdown was weird! It didn't make them famous. I think you and I need to have a talk to Gillian about the Countdown Kid mentality. Why the hell make The Aliens chart, and not The Scientists or The Innocents? To be fair, I had some friends that were hardcore Countdown kids, and they were on the ball. One Countdown kid got me onto Radio Birdman, Midnight Oil, Models and Hunters And Collectors before any of those groups had records out. The same Countdown kid insisted that I see this new band called INXS before they were signed. They weren't dumb kids.

This was AC?DC's first No 1 record albeit in Perth Western Australia. They were double Billing with Carlotta (Australias first Full gender reassignment) at the Bethovens nightclub in 1974. The single was released in Perth and went to No1 but the band ie the Young brothers were not happy with Dale or the glam image. They went back to Melbourne picked up Bon Scott from Adelaide revamped the sound to a heavier rock sound and released their first album. Compare this version with with a Bon Scott version. Trouble we had here in Perth though was when they released the Album the radio stations continued to play this version when AC/DC was requested but it was the Album version most were after.
