Hey Brandon I have a quick question....I was wondering how to get a Eddie Van Halen tone using a variac ...I currently have a bugera 1960 amp that is 150 watts ....I also have a variac very similar to yours..was wondering if you had any sugestions on how low to set the voltage ? .....plus I recently saw your video named " jamming in the key of E(vh)" ....# great video ......I noticed you used the shaffer...I was wondering if you could make a video in the future on how to get a Van Halen tone useing a variac....Thanks for everything you ROCK!!!!!!!!!
@JMP_22037 жыл бұрын
Well EVH apparently set his around 90 volts. But there's a bit more to the story and I'm not sure how your amp would respond to that. I've actually been planning to do a video on this topic so be on the lookout because I'll explain everything!

The attitude, the playing, the vocals, the tone are all great - definitely one of the best covers of the song on KZbin. But here's the thing: The original song actually speeds up considerably after the bell intro. It jumps from about 96 bpm to 110 bpm. This cover makes a compromise of around 100 bpm across entire piece, which makes the intro feel a bit forced and the actual song to feel too slow. Not hating, just trying to provide some constructive criticism.
@JMP_22035 жыл бұрын
Yeah it does speed up in the original. Unfortunately I had to keep a constant tempo so I could program the midi drums.
@ehss1924 жыл бұрын
@@JMP_2203 Depending on what you use for a DAW when programming MIDI you can ramp tempo up or down. Either way, great cover. Definitely in the top 1%!
@JMP_22034 жыл бұрын

Very nice cover! What amp settings do you have for that? I have been trying to get the same tone for months and can’t seem to get it, I have a Marshall vs100 valvestate
@JMP_22034 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Keep in mind that settings differ between amps so unless you have the same model it will not sound the same. That being said, my settings are presence 0, bass 8, middle 5, treble 7, master 3/4, preamp 8. Also keep in mind that I was using the schaffer replica which has it's own impact on the tone.

Can you explain what the variac is used for...and can it be used on a solid state amp
@JMP_22037 жыл бұрын
Sure! I'm actually planning to do a "rig rundown" video soon that will go more into detail on the gear that I use so keep an eye out for that. But I'll give you a quick explanation. "Variac" is short for variable AC, so it's basically a power transformer that allows you to adjust the output voltage. I use it mainly to protect my amp -- my JMP is 40 years old and the circuit was designed for 110V. Sometimes my wall voltage is as high as 129V so I use the variac to turn it back down. But you can also use it for creative purposes. Perhaps you've heard of Eddie Van Halen's legendary "brown sound"? Part of the way he got this tone was by using a variac set around 90V for his amp. The lower voltage changes the feel and tone of the amp. As far as solid state... NO!!! Most modern electronics (including guitar amps) have voltage regulators inside. If it reads the voltage as too high or low it will shut down the amp (to protect it). Also, this allows them to work on a wide range of power grids (you may look at the back of a device and see something like "Input: 100-240V | 50/60Hz"). Now if you had just a simple MOSFET amp, like some of the early solid state ones, they would not contain this circuitry. However, the variac would still serve no purpose. Although tubes and transistors are similar, they work in a different way and I don't believe there would be any benefit to using the variac with a solid state device.
@Casey8357 жыл бұрын
With all that equipment I think Premiere Guitar might be interested in doing your rig rundown lol. May I ask do you play professionally or do you buy this cool stuff with your day job? I've watched since your "Rock or Bust" video and it seems like your rig keeps growing.
@JMP_22037 жыл бұрын
Well no I don't play professionally (yet) haha ;) But I've been playing guitar for almost 14 years now, so I've acquired all my gear over that time. In the past few years I have invested in more "professional" level gear and some of the stuff I've always wanted, but I had to save up for each thing and it took time to "grow". But now there's not too much more to add - I don't really use pedals or anything so I'm pretty happy with my rig for now. But I get a lot of questions about the stuff on top of the amp, which is why I want to do a "rundown" video.
