In the past I have heard discussion around the premise that morality either is individually subjective or collectively objective. Professor Grayling's point on inter-subjectivity, where we steer morality through group discussion and feedback, is very interesting. Excellent interview David, I would like to hear more!

I an Catholic and believe in a God, but my moral code is based on my intellect and not some book written over 1000 yrs ago. Thus a person can be both religious and a Humanist.

I finally come across an individual that thinks in the same light as me. I am free from religion, and I feel liberated. Humanism is awesome for sure. I want to meet A C Grayling.

As an FYI to anyone who will get confused by this guys way of defining "Humanism" it has NOTHING to do with whether you are religious or not. Assuming in any way shape or form that being religious and humanist conflict in the least way is inaccurate.

Grayling (and Sam Harris) don't understand the argument. The argument "atheist morality is arbitrary", is not implying that its random subjective morals, that change all the time. And therefore, "oh tomorrow you might think eating babies is moral". That's not it. The argument is that what Atheists call morality is in actuality personal preferences. And it has nothing to do with morality. Its personal preference, just like some people like to donate to charity, some people want to become doctors to help people, some people don't eat meat because they feel guilty...and some people just don't care. Those kinds of attitudes have nothing to do with morality, even though some people incorrectly use moral language in describing them, they are Amoral personal preferences. Grayling or Sam Harris don't recognize the difference between Amorality and Immorality is the bottomline. And must have never heard of moral skepticism, or nihilism.

The way he describes the difference between ethics and morals sounds completely backwards. The way I understand it, ethics are rules or expectations about the interactions between individuals within a group or a society. Morals are a person's ideas about how to conduct themselves; they are subjective and ultimately determined by the individual, although they might be influenced by other sources.

"...non-atheists, agnostics perhaps..." I expected better from Prof Grayling, these two terms _are_ _not_ _mutually_ _exclusive_. Agnostic atheism is a thing, a big thing.

Atheism is, believe it or not, the denial of theism. So theism is the belief that God exists, something is divine, atheism is the denial of that. Ethics has no natural or pre-ordained connection with religion. Aristotle had a very complete natural ethics, Plato did, Thomas Aquinas praised reason and natural law, Kant had an ethical theory, and then many in past two centuries have developed utilitarianism. Ethics is an objective discipline, not relativist. How and why SOME religious people come to think religion is necessary to underpin ethics is beyond most ethicists. Humanism is simply the advancement of human values over and above an ascetic regard for a transcendent God. Surprise, there is a very large contingent of Christian humanists.
