This is the best explanation I have found! I separated my left ac joint in 2015 from overuse and weight lifting- did physical therapy on it. It was very helpful. however, the past several years I have had issues with range of motion and it feels like the clavicle is moving around and the other bones connected to the ac joint push into surrounding tissues. I’ve contemplated going back to orthopedic but I regularly see a sports focused chiropractor who works on it. When he manipulates it helps, but then it seems to shift again causing loss of range of motion. I will be using the lacrosse ball and working on my upper back tightness and see how that helps. It’s super helpful to hear why the ac joints have had issues in the first place and I’m hoping I can restore function Thanks for the information!

This has connected so many dots for me. I injured my AC joint playing basketball 6 weeks ago and it wasn't through specific trauma, but thanks to your explanation seems like a gradual wear and tear and misuse of the shoulder altogether. I'm 34 yrs old now and have always had rolling shoulder issues as well as tendency to wing my scapulas when pushing or lifting. Time to fix this.

A few weeks ago I had really bad pain and tension in my upper back. Massage helped. But it lasted for a while and now my AC joint is in a lot of pain. It had been separated from a fall years ago and I went thru PT for it. I just tried the ball exercise on my upper back and it helped relieve some of the pain immediately.

I was a guitarist for many years growing up, which caused my right arm to hunch forward while playing. Then i got into weightlifting, and at work, i would do a lot of overhead activities, reaching forward and extending the arms backward. I believe all of this led me to separate my right AC joint in the shoulder from all this repetition with a grade 2. I first noticed this injury in 2015. I would develop chronic muscle knots or tightness in these areas from that point on. My shoulder hasn't been the same since. It sucks

This is a very good video mate, especially identifying ribcage / thoracic as the reason why the ac would become separated. and also saying that the reason the pec gets tight constantly is it is being put in a shortened position by the ribcage. the only thing i would add here is that there are ways to go at it without the massage ball. breathing exercises in a variety of positions, using gravity to assist and also using a variety of reaches (high reach v low reach) biases air into different parts of the ribcage resulting in expansion of the jammed up areas, if drills are done well enough the ribcage becomes mobile again. it's too late for my AC though ha ha

How do I help AC ligaments heal tighter and help lessen the bump? I’m still waiting for an appt to see a physical therapist. Injury occurred in R shoulder almost four months ago, FEB2024. Got athletic tape but no idea how to apply. Hoping to be told there *is* a way to prevent the bump being permanent. If it’s not too late, I’ll take the pain, and put in all the training it takes. Just don’t know how. Last physicians I saw asked how long ago - 12 weeks. They said something like “healing times over, rehabilitation time begins”. Being told by a very confident NP that I should only hope that it isn’t too late before I see the PT for advice, answers, and training to mitigate deformities whilst softly shaking his head in a mild pity. It made my self consciousness of it so much worse. Like, no matter how desperately dedicated I got into strength training, felt feeling like I will always be less in potential. Forever “weaker” than before. I’ll put the work in if it’s not too late. The accident was a bit traumatic- flying shoulder plant on a snowboard. I was seeing stars and only felt pain. Hairline fractures don’t scare me like this does and I’ve had five of those between three occasions. Dislocated wrists too healed fine, but every day I’m asking when it will go away. 98% of the pain feels gone but it sucks picturing buffalo wing deboning every spanking day. Is it *really* just cosmetic when it doesn’t look or feel that way?
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 5 ай бұрын
It really depends on the person mate. In theory if someone has improved their daily sitting postures and shapes with the neck and shoulder and upper back area, they have also optimised their mobility through that very same neck, upper back and shoulder area, AND have reclaimed normal shoulder and scapula muscle strength and function, then any left over bump can potentially be just a cosmetic thing. If there is any pain associated with the bump, then until those other things have been optimised it’s hard to really understand how much the bump is contributing to those symptoms, and how much it is just that obscure, hidden underlying dysfunction.

Dude you have been really helping me. Rare to find a modern physio type like you that is both modern, holistic, actionable, and measurable. Its funny how so many videos have the same treatment, but I have been doing it and have noticed really dramatic help with my ac joint pain, shoulder pain, bicep tendon pain, and costochondritis. My right pec feels so much more mobile after doing this. Do you have any thoughts on the backpod? Im not a backpod shill but he's one of the only other guys I've seen talking about rib mobillity as a treatment for costo/tietze syndrome. I didn't notice much relief from it although it is essentially the same principle as what you're talking about here. I think the lacrosse ball is much denser and better for targeting.
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it mate! Ive learnt over the years that each issue isnt necessarily an isolated issue with its own isolated causes and fixes, but a different expression of the same/similar root issues. That upper back/rib mobility is just so central to so many different issues. Ive seen the back pod and i definitely agree with the concepts, im happy for people to try different tools and balls with different densities as each person might need something different depending on how stiff/tender/sore they are. Lacrosse ball is a great density and grips enough for me, but someone else might need a tennis ball or something a little bigger! At the end of the day if everyone understands what they're doing and why then they can find the best version of it for themselves.

There doesn't always have to be a direct traumatic injury or impact to cause AC joint dysfunction. I find one sneaky cause can be constant poor loading from leaning on the elbow when sitting or even if someone is pretty slouchy with their shoulder posture.

Hey Shaurya, I can't really offer anything in the way of specific advice over the internet as I can't assess you for myself. But from a general perspective, there is often some areas around the AC joint that may contribute to someones symptoms - upper back joint stiffness, weakness through the shoulder blade muscles, tight chest muscles, weak rotator cuff/shoulder muscles, poor general neck and shoulder posture. If you were assessed by someone they might find some of these to be an issue. Hope that helps!

Just started and by 7 reps I was out of it. I've never did a push up since. It started as a tiny bump and now it's about 1/2 golf ball size. I need this info. No pain on the other exercises but I do have pain when reaching outward like in a car at an ATM or rural mailbox.

@@YourWellnessNerd One conclusion I've came to is one of the correction exercises I started doing has caused the bump to get bigger. I never saw the bump until after I started doing the hanging with straight arms exercises which supposed to aid pain reduction in my shoulder. I took that off my list completely. Some online remedies should be started with lots of caution.

It's hard to say Andrew. There's a difference between being abnormal and being an issue. If someone is strong, good posturally and doesn't feel too many issues with it, it can just be an aesthetic thing for some.

I recently injured my AC joint and have been rehabbing it for several weeks. I have full range of motion but the joint is tender with mild pain and certain movements cause clicking and popping. Your video is excellent and I am a firm believer in the totality of the body and how certain "weaknesses'" lead to other issues. My trapezius muscles are extremely tight from the neck down under my shoulder blade. I recently purchased a theracane and have been activating various trigger points in an attempt to break the spasm and tightness. My question is this.....can I accomplish the same results using the theracane as opposed to the tennis ball you recommend in the video?

It's hard to say without seeing you George, but a tennis ball can be subbed with anything a person feels gets into the deeper joint stiffness!

I’m in so much pain. I think my shoulder has been dislocated for nearly twenty years but have recently had escalation of symptoms and escalation of thoracic outlet syndrome . Shoulder and neck click on that side and never feel to be correctly aligned . Shoulder feels lost like it doesn’t know where to go and I’ve often over corrected and done physical therapy that may have made it worse . Lots of inflammation , the tightest scalenes ever , and dowagers inflammation.

Can AC joint separation cause scapular winging?
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 3 ай бұрын
In theory it could if the scapula part of the AC joint was dislocated and pulled the scapula into a suboptimal position. But clinically it can be more likely that both the AC joint dysfunction and the scapula winging are both symptoms of someone’s broader postural and positional habits.

It often speaks to dysfunctional postures over time. A joint doesn’t have to be painful for it to be dysfunctional, but poor loading over time ie) slouching etc can have long term consequences.

@@YourWellnessNerd so it might not be AC discolation, as I have no pain. I also have dips in my shoulder that I feel are from the working out and I don't know if its good or bad. I have a 20 year old separated ac joint thats been an issue since day 1, even after 2 surgeries including a modified weaver and dunn that i never let heal . I was young and dumb when it happened. i didnt understand the injury and i never let it heal before going back to normal activities.. . its very unstable and i live in chronic pain that effects my quality of life.. im in great shape physically over all, i work out almost daily and target my ac join with physical therapy exercises .but it effects pretty much all my exercises .. when i do pull ups it feels like im not hanging evenly because theres so much instability in that shoulder that its reach is longer when hanging, its very frustrating. .. my shoulder blade position is different than my non injured side, its lower and sits flat almost .. i have achy back pain on that side daily and a difference in leg height that i feel is all stemming from this shoulder injury ...do you have any advice for me ? i dont even know where to begin . thanks bud
@YourWellnessNerd
@YourWellnessNerd 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! Sorry to hear about your shoulder mate, its not nice when it's impacting your ability to enjoy exercise. Clinically, I find the majority of people are told to just focus on strength (rotator cuff, lower traps, scapula muscles etc) without taking the time to improve everything around that joint to improve the environment it exists in. I always try to improve the function of my patient's upper back/rib cage as it has such a huge impact on the function of the ACjt especially if its already unstable. The ball exercise from the video mimics what I'd ask any therapist to work on with their ACjt patients in terms of mobilizing the back joints and the rib cage joints. Its also really important that any shoulder injury is followed by their best efforts to practice and maintain great shoulder postures for the same reason as above. I wish I could be more specific for you mate, but unfortunately my hands are tied over the net. Hope that helps in some way!

Hey mate, sorry to hear the shoulder is an issue for you. It's best you find a good doctor and/or physical therapist/physiotherapist to help guide you. Forward dislocation break at the AC joint age 19 no specific physiotherapy or help was bodybuilding and surfing suffered severe impingement in the shoulder collapse in 1999, while working in the gym started training Pilates and trying to do rotor cuff work and stabilising the scapular unfortunately, despite recovering well, after the second collapse of the AC joints I was talked into having the operation of distal lateral clavicula extraction. My shoulder has never been the same as it was prior. Let alone prior to the injury, and now if I benchpress for more than a couple of weeks or do chin ups, not even with body weight I wind up with the whole trapezius, and top of the lat terrace, major terrace minor in for sprinters and subscapularis, adhesions and pain stiffness et cetera at 45. I just re-entered the gym and managed three back sessions and have had to take nearly a week off with intense massage and using a tens machine currently to try and get the muscle to calm down, as I now feel like I have a piece of steel running under my armpit and into my trapezius help? 😮🙏🤔😞
