"Guards chasing me, my notoriety going up and having to hide was reminiscent of the worst parts of old AC".. that's what we want tho 😭 the chase and escape loop was a fun and important part of the older games. and it's arguably very well executed in Mirage. Other than this, I do agree with some of Matty's criticism of the open world activities and the script of the game.

the thing is it's not just his criticisim, the stuff he was bringing up was stuff people back in the day also didn't like, but i do agree with you on the idea of the escape loop, it makes sense that the guards could overwhelm you to the point where you have to flee or die on the spot. we don't want the game to be a walk in the park, but i feel the fighting mechainics are a bit lackluster, they often play like an assassins creed that was meant for the lesser paltforms, if you remember assassins creed liberation where you play that french black girl, well that game was made for one of the lesser platforms and it played like it too, this game is on one of the big platforms and it plays like it was meant for the lesser platforms. the animations in combat are very limited and lackluster even worse than the first ever assassins creed game and that makes it very sad to compare it with from that standard, but the game also brought back game modes nobody liked even in the older games, like the poorly thought out tailing missions or the escort missions or the stupid missions when you have to chase a stupid paper in the air or the stupid missions where you race another NPC, like really dumb game modes like these that they just threw in because of nastalgia reasons, but people were looking for something more.

@@user-tp5yb4hr4w Thats a whole lot of conjecture of what people liked and didnt like about the games. Mirage has issues, yeah, as to be expected by a small spin off game... But the elements it focuses on are what made AC, AC. We can all agree tailing and maybe escort missions have never been great. I am sure there is people that like them, but on a gameplay side they have never been engaging. However, the other missions are what people enjoyed. Catching the flying paper is a parkour test in the open world, a chance to test your mastery of the navigation, and thats the same as the races. Actually sounds like you just dont like missions revolving around parkour... It's mission variety, something not focusing on combat or sneaking but instead the 3rd pillar of the series, parkour. Including these missions doesnt detract from the core of the game and are optional so it's really a non-criticism.

Personally for me, Mirage is EXACTLY what I wanted. Now I want a game with more precise parkour that was present till Revelations. This game holds me responsible for my actions in the city. After a long time, it felt like a well thought out and planned ubisoft game. Edit: Set your run/walk to the right trigger and The tools to the left stick press. That way The control scheme feels much closer to The originals.

Yeah, you can tell that parkour was tweaked just a little for Mirage, better than the previous 3 games but still a little stiff/unwieldy at times, especially when trying to jump either left or right just slightly. In older games, you pretty much got where you wanted to because it was so precise and almost seemed like the game knew where you wanted to go before you did.

Return to roots for me is simple. 1. Can I use stealth (hidden blade, different tools, social stealth, just general sneaking) 2. Parkour, can I jump from building to building, fluid climbing that isn't totally mindless, 3. Finding creative ways to get to your target. Not just simply go in kill everyone and take out your target without so much as thinking about it. 4. Bonus as it's what I prefer in all games, a decent story with some side stuff to do. Could Mirage be better sure but I'll gladly take the stealth assassination gameplay over Valhalla's attack every enemy until they are dead approach. Though I'm not against Valhalla myself, it was just more of the same from other games and very bloated.

All I want from AC is Origins pt2. Probably my favourite game in the series and currently replaying it for a 6th time. I like the rpg elements of the newer games but I want the side missions to be like Origins in the way that the characters all connect to the story and have stories of their own. That blew my mind, it still does considering not a lot of game companies do that and the fact that it was Ubisoft just blew my mind. What I like about Mirage is the main missions are in form of investigation, which is very similar to AC1. Basim by far is one of the best assassin who literally investigate and stalk his prey before landing a final kill on them. He also questioned Al Hasan's partnership with the doctor knowing he was one of the Order of the Ancients, as Al Hasan is breaking the third rule by unknowingly helping enemies achieving their goals further. His training montage plus the soundtrack makes me feel sympathy and understand how he become who he is later in Valhalla.

The way I look at Mirage is like this: It’s Ubisoft testing the waters of how the public’s reception would be if they *did* do a full-fledged old-school AC title, similar to how FromSoft was testing certain gameplay features in Sekiro before they got too far into developing Elden Ring. They wanted to see how players would react to things that either did or didn’t end up being in Elden Ring, such as stealth, swimming, etc. I could be (and probably am) wrong in my thoughts about Ubisoft’s intentions with this, but it would make sense for them, after hearing countless times how fans want a return to the old games, to turn a DLC for Valhalla into a bit of an experiment to see how something like that would realistically be received if they did it, rather than giving a full-blown game the go ahead first.

the only constructive criticism i could give it is to take out all the RPG mechanics, because right now it's more of a hybrid of both worlds and most people who heard return to form wanted it to be more like Unity in stealth and animations when it came to parkour, but many of us liked combat from the old games as well, but maybe not so much fighting like Altiar, that is maybe a bit too far back, i was thinking more like the Ezio games, but also taking some elements from AC3, black flag fighting to a more perfect gameplay style. so there were some good things in all of the games, but there were some elements that were also bad and i think Ubisoft didn't really fully investigate what people meant in order to make this game, so instead of it being a slam dunk, it's more like a hybrid of ideas some good and some bad.

I've believed thus since I first played the game, but Syndicate is one of my top AC games and is severely underrated and underappreciated. Maybe it caught so much flak because it followed Unity, which although is fine today, had the really rough launch. But there are so many great things about Syndicate in my opinion. Amazing soundtrack, beautiful recreation of Victorian Era London, Assassins that actually look like they're trying to be incognito and not wearing lavish robes and armor and branding a sword for everyone to see. Where I didn’t touch a single soul, and was able to complete the mission. To me I felt like stealth had a big improvement. Compared to Valhalla.

@TheBadasssnoopy

Okay, I really like you, Luke, but I feel like you are being kind of a hypocrite here. You say that pointing out that AC mirage's attempts to harken back to old mechanics and design shouldn't be pointed out as a negative point toward the game because it's intentional, and the fans want it, but then you basically say the opposite about Starfield. To be clear I don't like Starfield, and agree with you about the problems with it, but there is something really disingenuous about pointing out that Starfield is dated and feels like something that should have come out a decade ago, only to then complain and try to defend when people try to say the same about Mirage. You are clearly a big fan of the AC franchise, so obviously you are going to have a bias toward it, and that includes the older games. So obviously a return to form for you is a positive, but for anyone who is more of a casual fan it's a big step back, pretty much all the points you make against criticizing Mirage's dated design can be made by a BGS fan for Starfield, but if you saw someone make those points for Starfield you would have called them a fanboy and talk about how Hype makes you stupid and stuff. You can like something while also acknowledging that one of, if not the main reason, you like it is because of personal bias, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you recognize that and make that clear, everyone have biases, it's a natural thing. I just always felt you came across as very fair and objective, and it's one of the reasons why I generally really enjoy your content, even when I don't agree with you, I get your perspective and mindset, but this is the first time when I feel like you are being kind of hypocritical. Sorry if this is maybe a little aggressive, still love you dude.

What i wanted was an AC game that had major elements of the early days of the franchise, but MODERNIZED. I dont need the good and the bad. Just take the good and modernize the bad. However, im still happy with mirage because Its fun enough, and it feels like a stepping stone to get to where i would like the franchise to go. Its something they can build on. Honestly, my biggest complaint about this game is ironically, the combat. It's not that the execution of your character's moves or the combos are bad or anything... it's that, when you strike your enemy with a regular attack, like, when you actually land a hit, your enemies, barely stagger at all! They just kind of stand there and don't hardly even flinch! It's like, what the hell, man?! Why would you go through all this effort to make the game look and feel like a classic AC game, and then get all lazy with basic combat response, mechanics?! Anyway, other than that, I have been really enjoying the game. Just.. really annoyed by this aspect of the combat.

In all honesty, Mirage is kinda what i wanted back, personally Unity and Syndicate kinda was like the perfect point for me maonly unity cause you had so many options and combat still required strategies with tools and watch whos gonna smack ya but anyway, Mirage is fine being like ac1 but okay parkour and combat but the stealth is perfect for me, im actually climbing, avoiding combat or use my tools to escape or give me a w in a fight, and the contracts remind me of the classics like ezio games. So me personally this budget AC i think shows they knew what made it just fun in a way. Idk that's just me lol plus on the pickpocket i turn off the mini game so i feel like ezio pickpocketing 😂 Nice edit: I recommend also not only avoiding the teleport move but also the eagle when being stealthy, feels good relying on eagle vision again. 😁

I wish they'd remake AC3 from the ground up. I loved playing as a Native American, loved the time period, the maps, the historical characters, and the relationships between the main characters. The game flow needs redesigned though so it moves faster and allow us to skip the beginning in a New Game + mode (some parts of that story were a slog to get through and having to replay the opening kills any replayability). All the bugs need fixed including the DLC content which I've never played, but have always heard is so buggy it's almost unplayable. There's a ton of good in AC3, but the bad stuff drags down the entire experience, but I think it would be easily fixable with some editing and rewrites.

The only real 2 problems I have are that the facial animations for most cutscenes, other than the really important ones are so weird just like with Odyssey and Valhalla. Robotic. Like they don't use mocap for those but just stock animations that they combine together. I thought this would go away because this isn't a game the size of those other 2 and there aren't 2 playable characters. So I thought the quality would be more AC Origins level when it comes to characters animations in cutscenes. And secondly, I very much appreciate how much work they put into the world design for better parkour and some of the additions. But man, the manual side and back eject are missing so much. If it were a developed system like the older games it would make the parkour so much more varied and deeper than basically just holding one button and joystic forward. I know they exist but are very random and not accurate. But I have only played a couple of hours. Those are the big two things.

I am actually really happy with what Mirage has brought back, but if Ubisoft don't intend on making another game like this, then I can only hope that the future games will actually live up to their title and let you play as an Assassin (Or Templar, another 1 or 2 games of that wouldn't be a bad idea). Also, I would be really happy if they kept the social stealth (blending) and notoriety systems and the focus on Parkour gameplay. For me, those are the biggest things that should not have been taken out of the franchise in the first place. The franchise didn't have to trade its identity for innovation, it could have kept all of that and updated it's combat system, Assassin's Creed Origins basically did that and they shouldn't have moved away from that in the first place. Assassin's Creed Odyssey might have been excusable if it was the only game to have nothing to do with Assassin's because it was set before Origins, which is where the Assassin's order began as the Hidden Ones. But it wasn't, their next game was set after Origins and basically had nothing to do with the Assassin's despite the fact that they already existed. If Eivor's story was a little similar to Edward Kenway's, where Eivor joined the Hidden Ones or worked with them a lot more once you got far enough into the story then I feel like it might have worked better (I am mostly referring to the game's narrative and the identy of the franchise, nothing could make the open world feel fun after the first 3 - 5 hours of gameplay).

Assassin’s Creed was open world adventure from AC II on. It’s one of the reasons why I liked it. You could do many missions in any order through a chapter/dna segment. Mirage is aptly titled… it looks like AC from a distance but once you get on it it’s just not there. AC is not a gameplay type. There is no reason to play this story other than to show some history of Basim. What was great about AC was the stakes. The whole point was to go into the Animus to find an artifact in history so the Assassins could locate it in the modern day before the Templars could. This was the interesting thrust of the stories. Once Desmond was killed off the franchise had nowhere to go. There is no twist on historical context within the story. There are no interesting historical figures to interact with. There is no Animus. There is no Shawn or Rebecca giving support, especially the codex which was Shawn’s thing. There’s no inherent tension between the factions to propel the story. Gameplay is just a mechanic used to tell a story. Without a good story the mechanic is simply mechanical. This game is built on a dumbed down version of the bloated reboots. Basim is clunky AF and slow. The setting is beautiful but lacks variety and interest. It resembles AC I visually because of the location, especially the “Hidden Ones” bureaus which look like the first game. But the gameplay is as repetitive as the first game as well. I played AC II first then played the first game after going through to Unity. There is no real progression to ranks or tools. I got the deluxe edition so I started with the best weapons and have literally never used any of the gear chest weapons. I have used a handful of upgrades which I could do early. I spent my focus on filling out the middle tech tree to allow for the double first tier attributes. I’m about 3/4 through the story so far (20+ hours). It’s not horrible but it’s not classic AC. It’s a time waster but not critical to the AC universe. AC fans don’t want RTS grindy games. They (we) want an open world game with a compelling story and a reason to move that story forward through gameplay, with options of how to do that, either stealthily or head on if necessary. The character ability and tech upgrade system in the old games were simple but elegant and weapons were interesting or attractive which hasn’t happened since Unity. It doesn’t feel like the original games mostly because the controls were very specific to each hand. Right hand was main weapon while left hand was tools. There’s no counter. The dodge and parry are split between hands having no reason whatsoever. Attack and Heavy attack are the same button. Shoulder buttons are not good attack buttons except for when in a vehicle like GTA. I was hoping Mirage would be more like the original games but it really isn’t. It just looks like it from a distance but vanishes when you get there. It’s a Mirage…

This game felt like a modern version of AC Black Flag: Freedom Cry DLC. The storyline and game play mechanics are very similar. You can tell that the developers had similar overall goals when making both games. It creates an appreciation for older games. It definitely made me miss characters like Ezio who I felt was a lot more OP which played into the assassin fantasy. It's almost as if Freedom Cry said "here's my answers but change it up a bit so the teacher won't know you're copying me." And Mirage actually listens. My biggest gripe with the game was the fact that there wasn't much character development in Basim although I was sold on it be a character progression game. Some of the decisions Basim made at the end of the game I expected from an initiate and not a master assassin.

The formula isn’t what lowered sales for AC.. it was the constant yearly releases, mixed with Unity’s Launch debacle that got them to completely deviate. AC is an amazing franchise but you can ruin nearly any franchise that pumps out titles at this pace leaving little room for innovation

I feel like Ali could’ve been more of an important side character I actually liked his and basims encounters, I thought him and Ali would fight by Ali betraying them after beshis death, turning more to his own ideals and personal agenda. Kinda like basim at the end of the game but more sinister

I am ALWAYS here for praise for Sydicate! It is my favorite AC game that doesn't involve Ezio or Altair. Lol

It’s true that mirage is a lower budget title, but I mean, are all of these issues really symptoms of low budget? Or are they just poor decisions?

MIrage is exactly what I thought it was going to be and I like it. It's not a masterpiece but not everything needs to be one.

I really enjoyed this game best ac game we've gotten in a long time and I really hope all these people bashing it don't turn people away from it and stop ubisoft from giving us more like it

As a fan of Assassin's Creed and playing every game I loved Origins and I like Odyssey as an open world rpg generally but not really as an AC game. The attempt to explain the Isu and the beginning of this universe I guess was kinda cool in my opinion and I liked Kassandra so I ranked it behind Origins. However Valhalla just left an absolute hole in me that I didn't like. Mirage just came in and filled it just right and I want this UBISOFT branch studio to keep making AC games.

i don't understand what Luke is talking about when he uses the word cluncky in relation to assassins creed 3? the fighting was smooth, cluncky would be more like bethesda creation engine games, where the camera is stuck in one position always or the charactor in first person looks like a board and is stuck in that position but in 3rd person looks more relaxed. i guess i don't quite understand what he means by cluncky, because if you talk about the newer AC games i could say the animations look cluncky when climbing or fighting, but what exactly is he pointing to that was cluncky in AC3? i just lost on what he personally means is cluncky in these games?

The combat in that game is def clunky imo. Sometimes the enemies dont know when to wait or attack, and trying to use rifles or react to gunfire can be awkward and clunky I do like ACIII gameplay but I do have to agree that it can def be rly rly clunky, I think more so than any of the other AC games
