A short lesson on how to hold the sabre and spadroon. Ensure you maintain a loose grip until the point of striking, and manipulate the grip primarily with the thumb and index finger.

Drew R. Schulz Yes that is exactly what it was for. When the standard pattern spadroon was released in 1788 it had a fixed guard, but in 1796 it changed to the model seen in this video. Folding inner guards remained popular on British infantry officers swords until the mid 19th century. Having a smaller guard on the inside, no guard at all, or a folding one has been common on many swords since complex hilts were introduced, and this is simply about ease and comfort of carry, and/or decreasing wear on the uniform.

I prefer a hammer grip only. the thumb up is ok but I don't like how weak it is.

I highly doubt you’ll reply but can I apply these lessons to a standard sport Sabre?

Can you tell me more about the guard on that spadroon? Was it supposed to fold back when you wore it???
