As the new President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), T. Raja Kumar is implementing changes intended to foster greater transparency and cooperation among anti-financial crime (AFC) stakeholders, and governments and financial institutions may soon find themselves playing a role in those efforts. In an interview earlier this year with ACAMS Executive Director (and former FATF Executive Secretary) Rick McDonell, Mr. Kumar said the intergovernmental group is looking to:
Invite countries to lead on producing best practices for the AFC areas they are particularly strong in, including by identifying key experts in their jurisdiction who can inform such efforts.
Establish greater transparency in FATF’s research agenda with an eye toward alerting academics who might independently examine the topics to help identify knowledge gaps.
Institutionalize public-private partnerships with established platforms that can address financial-crime issues on an ongoing basis. One such model includes FATF’s private-sector consultative forum, which is intended to help AFC professionals “get things done that then makes a difference at a global level.”
