I'm from the Virgin Islands but was raised by an Antiguan. He isn't my biological father but that's my daddy regardless! Because of how good of a father he's been to me the Antiguan accent became the most beautiful sound to me in the world! It's literal music to my ears. My heart fills with so much joy whenever I hear it.

A lot of Dominican words have French roots coz we were colonised by the French. So ‘mamzelle’ is just ‘broken french’ for ‘mademoiselle’. The word " Tarl" is a contraction of "at" and "all" in the Antigua and Barbuda dialect, depending on the context. So, If someone tells you a crazy story you do not believe, you say "Nutten tarl can go so!" Nothing at all can go so."
@lifewithtrenel
@lifewithtrenel 3 жыл бұрын
As an “American” born to Antiguan parents but growing spending summers in Antigua, I recognize every single word and phrase and love to see the representation on YT. Definitely gotta subscribe. Also, tarl has many meanings, I like to think of it as the English version “not at all) ex Nuttin tarl go so = Nothing at all goes like that. 😆

I really,really enjoyed the video. Brad my husband was speaking to you through the computer screen when "Tarl " he said people in the villages of Wesley and Marigot use that all the time," nuten Tarl go so " he also says Dominica has different pronunciation depending on where you are, his friend from Grandbay was here also and had totally different words ,she only said "nightie" but all other answers were different. Please come with part two (2) good stress relief during this Covid-19 period.

Nuh is the basic 'no' but Tarl is "No" with extra :P. "Nutten tarl go so" is like "nothing like that happened/ you're lying". "Taaaarl" is like "hell no!" or "not me!" Its usually a 'negative' But my favorite is trying to explain ending sentences with "nah' or 'jack'. I always explain it way its like giving a command with "nah" = the unheard 'you' in a command "Leme lone nah gyal!" + "Leave me alone girl"
