Yes, and that is the way here in NC. A lot of southern girls are on the offense about sounding wrong or silly. I was raised in Fl with yankees as best friends and now I'm a hot mess. My Fl friends say I sound southern and I also take it like I sound stupid, so I correct myself when I hear it. Yet I love to hear some southern accents. I'm 56 and a hot mess. The route thing depends on the context I think. For example, "route 99"- the 'oute' would be out as in... well, out. But "take that route" over there would sound like, "take that root over there." I don't think that's because of where I'm from, that's just me. Apparently, I pronounce "data" differently than everyone else.

She's a Pennsylvanian--you ought to get a real northerner from New England. We, for example, pronounce the vowel sound in "aunt" like the "a" in "father." The way you two say it, it sounds like you are speaking of an insect. Some Southerners pronounce it "aint." There's also the issue of our alleged infamous "r-dropping"--as in "I pahked my cah neah the cu'b at Hahvid Yahd."

As for "iron" at 2:00, note that initially the word was iSen (like German Eisen, the city of Isengard in LotR...), but at some point the s sound was replaced with an r. Also, if you encounter a French person, they'll most probably say "i-ron", placing the vowel after the r.

+rjdulac Typically Northerners have a lot of stereotypes about the South, and as soon as they hear a southern accent, those stereotypes come into play. I've heard lots of people in the North say that all southern accents sound "ignorant." There are ignorant people everywhere and they tend to be the loud ones, so they unfortunately do a lot towards determining the stereotypes.

This supposed accent tag thing sounds more like it's comparing pronunciation or dialects on some of these words than actually a difference in accent. What I mean is, even when you both pronounce a word the same, there's still an accent difference. For instance even though you think that you both pronounce Alabama the same way, (and you do), there's 'still' a difference in accent. The southern has more of a drawl and twang as opposed to the northern.

I was raised by southern parents and when I moved to pa I had a little bit of a southern slang and I would say salmon, aung and all these words differently from them and I would get so confused as to why they are saying these words weirdly.

I was born in Ellijay Georgia my family and I moved to Pennsylvania when I was a year old. When I graduated high school we moved back to Ellijay. Now when I visit family and friends in PA they say I like your accent. But our accent is mixed between Georgia and Pennsylvania.

hahahaha darling all english came from UK so you did learned it but in the wrong way 😂
@alexiahrodriguez52635 жыл бұрын
It's an accent. There is no "wrong way" to say it. Plus, we separated from the UK so we don't have to speak like them. We are an independent country.

When I was growing up I called it a "channel changer" too, since my mom did. She also called conditioner "cream rinse" and the colander was the "strainer" LOL. Bless her! :D p.s. I think the answer they were trying to get from the Southerner was "the devil's beating his wife with a frying pan"... referring to when it rains while the sun is shining :)

While growing up I called the bugs that rolls up in a ball "Potato Bugs". I grew up in CNY (Central New York State) near Syracuse before moving to NC . We say "You Guys" instead of Y'all, I call pajamas "PJ's", we say lawyer as "Loy-yer", and we call the remote a "clicker". Ant and Aunt are said the same way and are pronounced "Ant" for the NY accent that do not live in NYC or long island. Crayon, I say "Cran" and I cannot think of any other words they may be different than you guys say

I was raised in Washington State, and I call the carbonated beverage "pop". To me, a "soda" would be like an Italian soda or a Ginger Ale. I call the long-legged spider "Daddy Long Legs", and the insect that rolls up in a ball when you touch it is a "potato bug". To me, "fire" has two syllables. The thing that controls the TV is a "remote", and at the grocery store you use a "grocery cart" or "shopping cart". My husband is a native Idahoan, and it drives me crazy the way he says some things. Like "drag" he pronounces "drayg" and "bag" he pronounces "bayg". He uses "drug" instead of "dragged". He also uses the word "rig" to mean ANY car, whereas to me a "rig" is only a semi. And even though we were raised in the same family, my brother says "warsh" instead of "wash", and I don't.

I'm from Alabama and my Grandmother always said "The devil is beating his wife" when it would rain while the sun was out.
