I'm from North Carolina and have felt this my whole life. My mom is from Chicago and her parents lived in Philadelphia, so my whole life going up to visit I had to deal with constantly being mocked by people and made fun of. I live out west now and deal with it here to. Over the years it's made me really insecure about my accent to the point that I assume anyone meeting me just assumes that I'm a dumb hillbilly. I can't tell you how many times I've considered going through accent reduction therapy to at least try to tone it down if not get rid of it completely. I hate that society has bred such a discontenment in me over it, because I really do love where I'm from and I'm proud to be from there, but I've gotten to a point that it almost feels like a curse at times. It fucking sucks having to walk into an interview with the thought in the back of my mind that I might not get the job because the employer thinks I'm too stupid to handle the job.

Arlersern Potato The way I hear it is that it’s a “proper” southern accent similar to a New York accent in the 30s (very rich, a lot of “uhh” and “umm” with intense vocabulary) but with a slight southern inflection. On the east coast you have the same basis of the accent but with gravely voice, it’s heavier and more solemn whilst on the west side of the state it’s much lighter with a traditional southern accent you’d find in a 1980s movie about a cowgirl finding a horse she loves

The accent in NC definitely depends on the region. In the cities, you are starting to see the accent neutralize due to the amount of new people. However in our rural areas, the accent remains strong and different depending on your location!

Oh my friend believe me you are more right than you know. I am from Cary and most people here and around here have this nondescript Yankee-California-Suburbanite "accent" that's impossible to place. It's only gonna get worse once Apple and them come here; I can't wait to see how many noxious yuppie-types crawl in from New York, California, etc. And as sad as it is to see a place's living history fading away and its unique identity dissolving before our eyes, it is still interesting none the less to see a new dialect and history forming here. I can't even imagine where it goes either.

This is my favorite english accent. Clean crisp and easy to understand. As a Greek and a non native English learner I always founded american accents easier and always had better results while learning with american teachers. But of all american accents I would say Dixie has the most pleasant to the ear accents. Again this is for non native speakers.
@funkaddictions
@funkaddictions 2 жыл бұрын
Dixie? I think you meant Tristan. She does sound more neutral than the rest, but I can still hear some southern accent in there. It's funny because it doesn't matter so much where a person is from, but who they pay more close attention to that defines their accent. I know a brother and sister that at the time lived together for all their lives and the brother spoke very southern while she was much more neutral. It was very ear opening.

It's sad to hear them say "bad accent". As if the more different from what you hear in movies an accent is, the worse it is. There is nothing wrong with having a strong accent. It's cultural diversity, it's beautiful, and it's a sad thing to see suppressed.

@@mattglasgow4383 Nice! I'm from southern california, so my accent is very much like what you hear in movies and tv shows. But my grandpa is from Texas, and he took care of me a lot when I was little. There are a few words ("thing", "theatre") that I say in a way that's different from people around me. They laugh about it sometimes, and I'm happy to have fun with it too. But it's also a nice reminder of where part of my family comes from, and a connection to someone I love who is gone now.

A lot of Scottish and Irish inhabited North Carolina, especially into the 1770s when the English were getting desperate for settlers. Actually, the Scottish and Irish were probably the biggest perpetuators of the American Revolutionary War (1770, not to be confused with the civil war).

May I say that Kelly Pickler gave NC a comedic reputation on American idol when she had her first television debut. With the exception of other celebrities that are out in the mainstream media, Michael Jordan, Chris Daughter, Clay Aken, do not have the southern twang as much. Scotty McQuerry, Jaime Pressly, and not to mention Kelly Pickler are the ones who represent us country folk.

Well Done. My mother went to North Davidson High School and I grew up in Rowan County. My biggest giveaway is calling people, hun, darlin', suger, etc. Its just what I do and I love when someone does the same to me. Well im from Davidson county and people do tend to think you are a little more backwoods depending on how thick your accents is. Throughout the community there still is the social norm for southern people to have southern accents, but the great melting pot of NC is growing with diversity every day and year. People from all regions of the USA are flocking here with the reason to live life at a slower pace. I would like to add that the young lady pronounced pronounces the word "OR" within her own dialect. Not picking at her just something im not used to.

There`s a few videos available in YT which treats the way my accent goes. Its a North Lincolnshire accent. There`s a bloke in North Lincolnshire called Farmer Wink, and you`ll find videos about him and his visit to London. It is rather amuzing. Some people might not quite catch what he says but I, being from the same part of England, understood virtually every word he said.
