A distinction should be made between formal and informal contractions. For example. " Do you not" can be contracted formally to "Don't you". But in common speech you are most likely to hear "Doncha". This is what you want to say if you really want to sound native! But you would never write "Doncha" unless you were quoting speech. It's really not an actual word.

I’ve noticed that my ESL students reduce the last letter in contractions because their native language (Spanish) is less aspirated or the flap in the back of the throat doesn’t exist in their language. I’m not sure if they can’t hear my “T” in won’t or if they can’t reproduce it.
@hadar.shemesh Жыл бұрын
It's likely the consonant clusters, the "nt" cluster doesn't exist in Spanish, so often, they will drop the T and pronounceo only the N. Check out this video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/majOY2etbbamr5o
@larrytruelove8659 Жыл бұрын
@@hadar.shemesh They’re not dropping it. They’re trying to produce it and sometimes they produce it. The final “N” or final “M” is reduced anyway without that combination. It’s possible that the reduction of “N” is the culprit for the missing “T” flap.

I'm brazilian and I'm learning english by myself about 3 months. From my point of view, english grammar is much more easy than spanish or portuguese for example. However, speak english is more complicated because it isn't phonetic leanguage. You don't pronunce completely words like portuguese or spanish. It's boring and non sense for me but I can't to do struglling with this...I need to learn and that's all matters!
