I'm a native speaker with linguistics training and this was fantastic. Your American accent is fantastic! I can only hear the tiniest hint of non-native accent, it's so wild. I appreciate that you included the name Siobhan because it's Irish and you'd be amazed how many Americans have no idea how to say it 😂

I heard for the first time the name "Siobhan" when I watched "Mare of Easttown" with Kate Winslet. The sound of that name was so different from the spelling when I read the subtitles and the way the characters called this proper name. Btw I loved this lesson. Please make more videos like this, one video for boys' names and other for girls' names that are very hard to pronounce.

Heck, a lot of native English speakers have trouble with Irish names - it's a different alphabet, it's not actually English, so people get thrown trying to apply English rules to a non-English spelling

Thank you Hadar for this wonderful lesson! It's my first time knowing about Siobhan as a name :) I had a South African colleague, I met him for the first time on an online meeting, his name was Eugene. As my second lauguage is French, and as he didn't introduce himself, I called him Eugène during the whole meeting even though I was aware that he's not French. He didn't correct me but I felt bad fo mispronuncing his name!

As a native speaker from UK (London/Essex) I wouldn’t even pronounce most of the names like you do 😂 For example I’d say something more like Ahh-thuh, Basically I’d do a non-rhotic ‘r’

Thank you Hadar for this lesson and it`s important, 7:12 Joaquin is not /kh/ as in Arabic /خ/? About the sound of Siobhan /shvan/ in Kurdish we have this name and it is written and pronounced exactly as /shvan/ /شڤان/ which means (shepherd). Hadar, if I were English native speaker I would shadow you because your voice and sound is much better than many native speakers.

I thought of a few scenarios listening to your video. First, many native speakers lack the skills to teach the pronunciation of their own names. And vice versa. I have trouble learning to pronounce names in languages I haven’t studied like Hindi or Finnish. Second, I think literacy in phonetic written language makes the process of segmenting and blending easier. So people with poor literacy in their native language will have trouble exercising your advice. Third, use of words like names may have unexpected rules, such as gender differences, diminutives, and even pronunciation changes in different positions in sentences such as sounds be silent or pronounced based on adjacency or grammatical position. Fourth, I think you need a lot of experience and insight to even discriminate, much less rapidly process, new phonemes. So teaching pronunciation is going to be different based on the native speaker’s language. I think most people have difficult breaking down the formation of words like all the intricate timing of breath control, voicing, nasally, gliding, lip position, palate closure, vocal pitch. Wow! What a difficult challenge for a speaker with little experience learning other language. Thank you for your openness about your own experience.
