When learning a new language, I always focus on first learning the words that I need to use in order to express the things I typically say in my native language. I like to write phrases and memorize them so that they are automatic. I always like to learn the words in context. The words flow out because they are learned in context and repeated over and over. I also like to use images in order to visually see what I’m talking about or describing and am able to make a visual and contextual connection. Here’s an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWK7gqOrZq2neq8 I continually try to learn to express the thoughts I convey in my native language. I look around the house and try to name all of the things I see in the target language. If I’m making a salad, I try to see if I can name the ingredients: radish, bell pepper, etcetera. Repetition and context are very important things for programming your mind. When I hear or read a sentence I understand, but want to be able to use spontaneously, then I write it down and simulate using it. I like to write lots of paragraphs and try to find exactly where I could use these sentences with speaking to someone. When trying to express one’s thoughts, there are often things one can do to get around not knowing a specific word. One can use the opposite of the word. One can also explain what it is or even use other forms of communication. However, when that I happens, I try to remember that I didn’t know the opposite of the word I ended up using or had to use a word that didn’t really convey what I wanted to convey and I write it down and then start doing my research. I usually end up learning a lot of other words and expressions and come out much better off because I discovered gaps in my language and also increased my vocabulary. As an interpreter, I believe words of specificity are the most challenging for people. When interpreting, you have to use the words that others use. For example, if someone describes the ingredients they used, such as basil, parsley, rosemary, and thyme, then you need to interpret those specific words. The same thing goes for any other word of specificity. For example, you might say that you went to the aquatic zoo and saw a walrus, a seal, a shark and a penguin. I used these examples to show that words of specificity are often the hardest for people. Idiomatic expressions are also difficult because we often have to know the meaning and cannot just infer it. The first time I had to interpret “You did a bang-up job,” I thought it meant a “bad job.” I didn’t know the meaning so I asked for them to rephrase it. They said “a fantastic or wonderful job.” I was able to interpret that. Now when I hear the word “bang-up job” I instantly know that it’s a “fantastic or wonderful job.” Having difficulty retrieving certain words also happens in one’s native language. As for expanding one’s vocabulary, learning synonyms is very useful. Since I’m an interpreter, I love to know many synonyms because I know that if I can’t quickly retrieve one word, I can retrieve another that has the same meaning. Look up the word “drunk” in Word Reference and then click on synonyms. There are many different words that mean “drunk” or “very drunk” in various registers. I always watch all of your videos until the end. Great job!

Can’t agree more. The idiomatic expressions and proverbs are real killers when performing simultaneous interpretation. Without the knowledge of stories/ rationale behind those sayings, and without burning the late-night oil, it’s tremendously hard to acquire, internalize, recall and apply in live contexts. It took me ages to “fluently” chant aloud an amusing one - “can’t make a silver purse out of a sow’s ear” (though there is a rather similar proverb in my native culture, it doesn’t involve “a silver purse”.). My trick was to practice the saying aloud and record over 10 times, and listen back at time intervals post recording, i.e. after 3hours, 12hours, 24hours, 72hours, 168hours, then once a week in next 2 months to sustain the memory and application.

She sounds natural because her first language is not tonal like Chinese . Tonal language speakers have a hard time losing their accent. You must have observed most Europeans and Indians learn English faster than the Chinese. It's because they already have most of the English sounds in their first language.

WOW! I’m 50 years old. Born in America but moved to India when I was 14. Moved back to America as an adult at age 24. Was never much of a reader except for my school books; my family wasn’t very “western” and wanted me to speak more of our Indian language than English/ speaking English was frowned upon- although I was “American” inside. And I became introverted and socially inept and had no friends/ friends that I could relate to, hang out with. Those 10 years have affected me to this day. I lost myself; I wonder how much more “fluent” I would have been in English if I had stayed here in America. I wonder how many more friendships I would have had if I hadn’t been uprooted at age 14. I lost my English fluency. My pronunciation had teetered a bit but now it’s fine. But I’ve lost fluency due to having no friends to talk to. I’m alone, quiet and socially anxious most of the time. Anyway, that circle diagram makes so much sense to me. I need to recall the words that I do know but that I don’t use. Thank you for this video-- I’m older but I need to improve for my self esteem. I’m intelligent but when I cannot articulate well, I hate how I’ve ended up and I feel completely humiliated in front of people because of it. I need to get out of this rut. I see people zoning out or not listening to me even with the little I socialize. I know my lack of fluency is a problem. I wish my speech would keep people engaged and wanting to listen to me. I will be studying this video inside out for sure!

I'm so glad I came across this video. She said so many true stuffs I always end up questioning myself and could never find a true answer to. I'm only 15 and many friends and family relatives tell me I put a lot of pressure on myself because I end up searching for a word I never use whenever I'm speaking. Because of this it lead me to feel insecure of myself when I communicate with people and that I felt stupid for forgetting these fancy words I don't even use. I always told myself "wow I'm 15 and I don't even know what this word means, how disappointing." I've never felt so disappointed in myself, it was so bad that I started stuttering and ended up never talking to people because I thought I'd say something dumb then make myself look stupid. But I realized that I'm not the only one who's felt like this before.

There’s no doubt in my mind that when it comes to language learning, children have the best methodology. The natural way is best. Talk, talk and more talk. I’m a native English speaker but a student of Spanish, on Saturday I’m going to a party in Jerez (Southern Spain). I don't agree with that. Children have to listen and take input a lot (enormously) to speak their native language. No baby can speak from day one. It's the listening by 1,2 year that make them speak. And when they speak,they (of course) use basic vocabulary but they have to continue to listen and observe everything around them (like they have a choice :) ). I think that's the key factor in terms of learning any language. Listening,input,imitating for a long time and then speak gradually

This is amazing suggestion, even for people that are playing around the C1 - C2 band. I learn Greek and sometimes find myself in an excessive effort to get exposed more words, but it is better to start automatizing and using more effectively fewer words I know, but I am not yet totally comfortable with. One of my goals this year is to be a more effective communicator. And I've been studying and practicing a lot different techniques since the new year but this method is so genius! I know a lot of words but like you said when it come times to articulate a thought or convey a message I'm searching for a word. Even while reading I'm like I understand that word based off the context but Ill still end up looking up the actually definition. I am 12 years old and I lived in belgium where they speak dutch. In 4th and 5th grade I started listening to English songs and watching tv shows I didn't realize that I was actually learning English. After that in 6th grade I moved to iran for some reasons I did not know the language over there (persian) and the only option was an international school so I went there and I realized that I had so much information in my mind that I never used. Of course I had a hard time getting used to talk in english but I did it after a lot of bullying. I want to do high school in the USA or any country where they speak English but I feel like my vocabulary is not enough and whenever I read a book I don't understand a bunch of words but I end up understanding the book bc of the context I really want to change that also a lot of words in articals and sometimes when i watch the news. I wanna improve my English to get to any English college I want and yes I know that I should not be worrying about my college now but I want to improve right now instead of when I'm about to go to college.

OMG, I remember when I was teaching English and whenever I came across a word I didn't know I was desperately trying to figure out what it meant. I never confessed I simply didn't know, instead I was making something up or interrupting with 'let's stop here and get back to the beginning' xD Sometimes I was even checking the words on my phone pretending I needed to text somebody. This is very interesting. I´ve been an English teacher since 2001 and my very first lesson with anyone above A2 level is almost word by word your advice above. I even use a similar graphical interpretation of what our active and passive vocabulary looks like. I cannot say I remember ever hearing such a presentation before, so I have always considered this lesson as a product of my own teaching experience. I find it fascinating how different people of the same trade can come to the same conclusion, albeit all but an obvious one. Very well put together Hadar! I really enjoyed watching this.

Thanks for clarifying the difficult questions I've been attempting at answering for myself. I started to realize how futile the attempt to expand and get good at the vocab was if this vicious cycle of learn->forget->learn-> forget-> learn-> forget kept on going.
