At the time I filmed this video I had been accepted into 5 medical schools, and I wanted to share the AMCAS application that got me there for the 2020-2021 cycle. Having now been accepted into one more program (and the school of my dreams), I’m even more glad that I made this video to help future applicants.
My hope by sharing this application and being transparent is that future medical schools applicants can apply for their cycles feeling better prepared and ready. Getting into medical school is hard enough so gatekeeping information is not something I want to do, especially as someone who is sharing my journey towards becoming a physician with all of you. I hope you enjoy my AMCAS application review!

What’re some questions you have regarding the AMCAS application? Are there challenges you face in completing it while we still navigate this pandemic? Having completed my application during a pandemic, I understand how hard it can be. Let me know down below!

Can you post the books you read in Med Fiction and the Physician? that sounds so interesting!
@santygudino_
@santygudino_ 3 жыл бұрын
Sure! Here are some of the books we read that semester: The House of God - Samuel Shem; The Citadel - AJ Cronin; The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories - Leo Tolstoy; Arrowsmith - Sinclair Lewis; After Many a Summer Dies the Swan - Aldous Huxley; Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - Jesse Andrews; The Gargoyle - Andrew Davidson; Diasy Miller - Henry James; Illness as a Metaphor and AIDS and Its Metaphors; and Love Story - Erich Segal. Some of these I liked *way* more than others, but I appreciated all of them as they gave great insight to the perspectives of patients and physicians. Personal recommendation would be When Breath Becomes Air!

Can I mention a chronic illness as being disadvantaged? I was diagnosed with severe UC in the summer before starting college and it took a toll on my grades and kept me from branching out for experiences/volunteering too. But I’m just scared bc I don’t want to blame my illness for all that

Great video! So you got accepted to some med schools without your mcat? I wanted some clarification on that part
@santygudino_
@santygudino_ 3 жыл бұрын
Great question, sorry if I wasn’t clear. My application was basically put on hold until schools received my score -even though they had already received my application. After they got it, I was then quickly offered interviews and later was accepted to the ones I’ve talked about. Hope that clears things up!

@@santygudino_ Thank you for the quick response! They say in the application cycle that ideally you should take your mcat before may or June so that schools have your mcat when you submit your application but with covid and everything, that makes it harder. When month did you end up taking your mcat? Also how many schools did you end up applying to and how many are you waiting for. Congrats again on your acceptances!
@santygudino_
@santygudino_ 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! That’s why I was originally going to take mine in April, before COVID and the summer riots had it get cancelled. I was able to reschedule it pretty quickly and took it in July. Because of COVID, we got our results in 2 weeks so I had my score before the month was over. So ideally, not what the timeline I was aiming for but it’s what mine ended up looking like.
@santygudino_
@santygudino_ 3 жыл бұрын
I’ll make a more detailed video about my timeline with all the schools I applied to in the near future, so stay tuned, but I applied to 20 schools. I completed 16 secondaries, have had 7 interviews, 5 acceptances, and am waiting to hear back from the others who have yet to offer me interviews/rejections!

What’re your tips on finding medical experiences?
@santygudino_
@santygudino_ 3 жыл бұрын
It'll really depend on where you live and the opportunities around you. I would begin by hearing out what others in grades ahead of you are doing and see what interests you most from that list. Alternatively, you could also search local hospitals and clinics and see if they offer volunteer positions and shadowing opportunities!

Would I be considered disadvantaged if women in my family weren’t allowed an education but I basically fought through it and I became the first high school as well as soon to be college graduate along with taking care of my parents as well? And low income
@Shivpi3141592654

That’s a really amazing story. Med schools would definitely consider that disadvantaged. One thing that really helps when it comes to the disadvantaged essay is to be very matter of fact. Don’t put too much emotion into that specific portion of your application. Especially since it’s a really short essay.

@santygudino_

@@HeavenlySunset24 They were not during my cycle last year nor this year - it's to prevent the spread COVID (which is really important since many of the people interviewing still need to see patients on a regular basis). So they've been virtual interviews, which in my opinion have lots of benefits.
