I was having trouble accessing the FM radio on a UV-10R at times. I discovered the squelch has to be to set to at least "1" before FM radio mode will work. If it's set to "0", pressing the call button won't access the radio. Not sure if this works on a UV-5R or not.

I have a BF-F8HP. Looks like SQL has to be at least 1 (as James Seabolt said in a different comment for the UV-10R) AND you can't be receiving any sort of signal on whatever your current frequency is set to. You have to find an empty frequency before you can press call to switch to FM.

You can listen all you want without license and only transmit in an emergency situation that's it only reason I don't have a license is cos its pretty dead bandwise in my area and no local clubs plus people just can't afford to risk money on a maybe

If you program via chirp is disables the FM radio, you have to switch it back on in the Baofeng software

I can only get into FM in “Channel mode,” I can’t seem to switch to 76-100 by pushing the band button. I only get 65-76.

I had a problem with this not working. For me you have to have "Broadcast FM Radio" enabled on CHIRP-next. It's in "Settings" then "Advanced Settings".

@@WA7HOI I found it, you hit SCAN until CT and R show up on the screen. You can still see the lights coming on to show signal but it wont interrupt it.

not possible, baofeng can only tune into uhf/vhf frequencies and the fm band is located in vhf so thats how come it can tune into those. am band is located in mf (medium frequency) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium_wave

No you can’t access AM. The radio operates on MHz not KHz. The AM band is similar to CB and HF at 10 meters. As simply as I can put it KHz or HF or AM signals go up into the atmosphere generally bouncing back off the ionosphere. The ionosphere works better at night which is why you can be in Oregon and hear a radio station in LA on the AM band. MHz on VHF or UHF are line of sight. If there is an object in the way, think hill or mountain that MHz signal is not getting through. Ok for the hams, yes there’s something called knife edge refraction but that doesn’t apply to the question. Hope this answers your question. KJ7YYT.
