History:-
___________________________________
Frost spent the years 1912 to 1915 in England, where among his acquaintances was the writer Edward Thomas. Thomas and Frost became close friends and took many walks together. After Frost returned to New Hampshire in 1915, he sent Thomas an advance copy of "The Road Not Taken". Thomas took the poem seriously and personally, and it may have been significant in Thomas' decision to enlist in World War I. Thomas was killed two years later in the Battle of Arras
Analysis:-
_______________________________________________
"The Road Not Taken" is a narrative poem. It reads naturally or conversationally, and begins as a kind of photographic depiction of a quiet moment in a woods. It consists of four stanzas of 5 lines each. The first line rhymes with the third and fourth, and the second line rhymes with the fifth (a b a a b). The meter is basically iambic tetrameter, with each line having four two-syllable feet. Though in almost every line, in different positions, an iamb is replaced with an anapest. The variation of the rhythm gives naturalness, a feeling of thought occurring spontaneously, and it also affects the reader's sense of expectation. In the only line that contains strictly iambs, the more regular rhythm supports the idea of a turning towards an acceptance of a kind of reality: "Though as for that the passing there … " In the final line, the way the rhyme and rhythm work together is significantly different, and catches the reader off guard.
It is one of Frost's most popular works. Some have said that it is one of his most misunderstood poems, claiming that it is not simply a poem that champions the idea of "following your own path", but that the poem, they suggest, expresses some irony regarding that idea.
Frost's biographer Lawrance Thompson suggests that the poem's narrator is "one who habitually wastes energy in regretting any choice made: belatedly but wistfully he sighs over the attractive alternative rejected".Thompson also says that when introducing the poem in readings, Frost would say that the speaker was based on his friend Edward Thomas. In Frost's words, Thomas was "a person who, whichever road he went, would be sorry he didn't go the other".
Regarding the "sigh" that is mentioned in the last stanza, it may be seen as an expression of regret or of satisfaction, but there is significance in the difference between what the speaker has just said of the two roads, and what he will say in the future. According to biographer Lawrence Thompson, as Frost was once about to read the poem, he commented to his audience, "You have to be careful of that one; it's a tricky poem - very tricky," perhaps intending to suggest the poem's ironic possibilities. A New York Times Sunday book review on Brian Hall's 2008 biography Fall of Frost states: "Whichever way they go, they're sure to miss something good on the other path.

It's one of the most popular poem by Frost on account of it's density and reverberating significance embodied in the context of the poem .It is the first poem included in the title mountain interval by Frost, this poem is about choices both major and minor..that the individuals faces everyday .Even a simple and honest choiches may present unforseen challenges and irrevocable changes in ones life. In the last stanza poet endows a philosophical dimension by alluding to the universal human condition which is translated as the theme of the poem that is apparently simple but innately crucial poetic reflection on the man and his creation of destiny though choice..justification of the choice and the devotion of choice taken by one in the important junctures of life is mentioned in a personified manner ..since existence precedes essence every human beings create meaning to their life conscious choices and it's devoted justifications .Frost believed that the poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom Frost here by captures the uncertainty in taking decisions and our natural desire to know what will happen as. A result of the decision that we dare to make. Literally all vital choices that one makes are always validated by life..✌✌✌💡💡

You're so close to the ironic interpretation of the poem, which I believe deserves to be more clearly stated. In your video, you astutely note that the poet sees one path as wanting wear, but that this is a personification. The speaker is projecting the self onto the path, looking for a sign upon which to base the decision. As the speaker progresses with the study of the second path, it is noted that really the paths have been travelled about the same. There really is no sign to right or wrong. Finally, the speaker shifts perspective abruptly to a future "ages and ages hence" and into the reflection that he chose the correct path, although this is cleverly written to not truly indicate a correct or incorrect answer. You again astutely point out that a sigh can be one of relief or regret. So truly, the speaker is retrospectively looking back with knowledge of what was the correct choice. This parallels Kierkegaard's famous statement that life can only be understood backwards, but must be lived forwards.

He is in the woods (forest) not a jungle. A jungle is TOTALLY different. "Just as fair" means the two roads look the same. The path "wanted wear" means it wasn't traveled on. "I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back" means that he saved the first road to go back to if he wanted to, but knowing how things go, he probably would never go back and take that other road. At the end he is looking to the future as a person who would be looking back and saying he by picking the less common road, it made all the difference in his life (no regrets).I will not be able to use this video in my class. :(. - signed, an English Teacher

Hmm. Interesting interpretation. I took it to mean that the poet will console himself in the future by telling himself that he took the road less travelled abd it made the difference in his life...but as you explained, there was no real difference in the roads. He is lying to himself in the future and admitting it now. For me, it’s a comment on how we make choices and tell ourselves stories on why it was a good choice - for the poet, he chose a road. It didn’t really matter which road it was because both were equally fair. But in the future, he will tell himself it was because he took the road less travelled (it wasn’t!) and it made all the difference (that’s uncertain and probably not true for that reason!). Anyway, my thoughts on the matter...

It depicts how different decissions we make in life makes our future and how we are responsible for the outcome of our own decissions. The poet feel that in future he can be either happy or sad depending on the decission he made but he will be solely responsible for his own bearings.
