👍How to be a respectful visitor to these places👍
Native American groups still live in this area and beyond today. These places are still special and hold significance.
1️⃣Don't climb on walls or structures. Don't lean on or climb over them. Many places don't even need to be visited up close. View these places from a distance or with binoculars.
2️⃣Do not touch the rock art. Don't touch or create new rock art to preserve ancient stories.
3️⃣ Leave All Artifacts. Leave artifacts and structures undisturbed to maintain their historical significance. It is illegal and wrong to take artifacts. If you want something to take home, support local tribes by buying their handicrafts and jewelry.
4️⃣ Manage Waste Responsibly. Use waste bags; don't leave human or pet waste behind. Don't 'go' near cultural sites.
5️⃣ Camp With Care. Don't camp near historical sites. No fires near these areas, and ensure all waste is packed out. Don't make fires in caves or alcoves. Camp in designated spots only. When you leave, make sure to make the site cleaner and better than when you found it. Pick up extra trash you may see.
6️⃣ Control Your Pets. Don't let pets roam freely near archaeological areas to prevent destruction. Pets are not allowed in or near sites.
7️⃣ Preserve Fragile Areas. Don't disturb fossils and please protect delicate soil and plant life.
8️⃣ Follow Rules. Don't engage in illegal actions such as building cairns, or using climbing gear to access archaeological sites.
9️⃣ Obey Drone Rules and Laws. Numerous locations in the American Southwest and beyond, such as the Navajo Reservation, Wilderness Study Areas, and various restricted spaces, enforce strict drone usage prohibitions. It is crucial to not only honor the legacy of the people who once inhabited these areas but also show respect for the present-day residents and adhere to their local laws, customs and regulations.

You're right. Real History, especially in the desert southwest is mind-blowing. I lived in New Mexico and Arizona, the old cliff dwellings there are incredible. They raise more questions than answers. Bit for me, it was always the eerie yet amazed feeling I would get in these places, walking the same ground as the ancients.

@@johnganshow5536 I grew up in WV in a small town where Native Americans had built 60+ mounds along the Kanawha River (where they buried their dead. It was a very holy area). The Smithsonian “excavated” (tore up and took) most of the contents. There are stories about researchers trying to gain access to the contents at the Smithsonian and being told that they didn’t have anything like that. Gone.

It is really amazing how widely inhabited the Southwest was. We find pottery sherds on every single trail and nearby, and recently found 10 different home ruins including a grinding rock, where most people would not suspect anything existed. Once you start seeing them, you cannot unsee!

I imagine the former dwellers aimed to conceal their presence; wanted protection and defense, from the elements and from enemies, wanted to detect in-coming from a long way off, had impressive survival skills, and probably had to stay on the move from year to year. Very nice video. Thank you.

Imagine how many people may have actually fallen from these cliffs and been injured or even killed by the fall. You know it had to have happened. How sad that would have been for the community. Life was very hard back then.

While it almost certainly happened from time to time, to be fair, it was probably pretty rare, or they wouldn't have continued to build in these areas. Consider, also, they were significantly smaller, leaner, and generally more agile than the average person today.

I can only imagine how dangerous it must have been for the people on the ground that they risked themselves and their kin to live up there. I wonder if the geography was different- the rivers higher and beaches coming up closer to the dwellings. I wonder if the cryptobiotic soil is indication of having been underwater once upon a time.

I always think of that too. I know people were smaller then, but it was still just as steep and dangerous, especially for children. Makes you wonder doesn’t it.

What amazes me is how the heck did they get such large stones lifted that high up. Can you imagine several guys wrapping a rope around the stone and lifting it up that high? Drones are so nice to have, we can see things we would never have been able to explore. That is a big sight and the whole are was quite active at one time.

I am sure someone else made this comment. The hundreds of years of snow and water has washed everything to the low points such as the gully below the ruins. I would walk that entire gully as far as it goes looking for artifacts. You do not have to dig or excavate to find something. I did not say pick up and take home. That documentation could have great importance to those who are licensed to excavate. Such as how far down the wash from the ruins did you find signs of life. 100 years of silt can make a big pile. Good luck with your adventures. Wish I were there with you.

Yes, washes are great areas to explore, as most pottery sherds and lithics wash down the washes.
