How is wind power converted into electrical energy? You've probably seen sometime a wind farm: several wind turbines, like the old windmills that move their blades when the air blows. It is a simple process at first glance, but maybe you don't know what happens inside a turbine to convert wind power into electricity.

Bro I my science project is due in two days ,I’m so fucked .I don’t know how the generator works, if it works like an alternator then it requires energy aka electricity, should I allow the electricity made by the gearbox to start up the alternator then it can use bits of the already generated electricity to power itself using the energy the fins have created. I really don’t know what to do, we can’t use batteries or any sort of gas or anything fossil fuel related meaning it has to be completely clean and can’t have a battery. This project is even harder since we have to draw and label and explain what each part does I thought it was due Friday but it was moved to Wednesday, May God have mercy upon my soul and I rest easy

Thanks for the insightful video. I believe in the natural source of Energy. Now I understand how the wind turbine actually works. I have also learnt how it can be controlled and sustained. This video will help me to impart this knowledge to others. This technology is most required for clean environment and especially when there is lack of mineral resource and threat from global warming.

@Don My *guess* would be that such a fast rotation would damage the equipment in some way. The only specific way I can easily think of is that in a generator, the faster the rotation speed, the more current that is induced in the generator. If there is more current than the circuit can safely handle, then it will cause a 'circuit overload' where it heats up and melts, to some vague extent. This is a complete guess, but hope it's maybe helpful.

One correction at 1:56: The vast majority of wind turbines use AC generators, so the electricity produced is AC. Is is then first rectified to DC in a rectifier and then inverted back to AC via a inverter. This disconnects the rotational speed of the turbine and the grid frequency. The rotational speed can thus be regulated to track the maximum power point (optimum tip speed ratio), which increases the overall efficiency.
@ruan2587
@ruan2587 5 жыл бұрын
@Don Depends on the frequency you want to produce. 50Hz systems for a 2 pole generator, the speed must be 3000rpm. In this case a 4 pole generator is used meaning you need a speed of 1500 rpm. Formula, n(speed)=(120 * f)/ p(poles)

Oh, you don't! I read a newspaper article once about how this whole town in Iowa got sick and had neurological issues from the constant flickering caused by wind turbine blades above them. Each turbine is about 10.25 stories tall, and every time one of the 60-yard blades goes by, it blocks the sun. So the constant "lights on, lights off" flickering was giving people migraines and seizures and other neurological conditions. Wind turbines are awesome, but you don't want them close to you! :)

hi there can wind turbines produce electric no matter what way they spin such as the generator output will it still give same if the rotors went from clockwise to anticlockwise. off course it couldn't do this right away as would have to stop but just the principle will they produce either way the generator turns

Why do they don’t mount the gearbox and generator on the base of the tower instead of on the nacelle on the top ? Just use and angular gear on the top to transmit the power to the base. Installation and maintenance cost would be half..or less

Sounds good on paper, but the amounts of materials needed to begin with are not mentioned, and neither are the compromises and impacts on the environment long-term, as well the limited serviceable life of the turbine, are all the parts recyclable, (at this stage the blades cannot be, and are simply hidden/ buried from the public eye, are the 600 + tonnes of concrete used in the foundations reuseable or removeable, and does it REALLY make energy supply cheaper, these are factors our kids need to know so wise decisions in their future can be made regards economic viability.

This is wrong in the video. Most of the wind turbines use AC generators, and the AC is first rectified to DC and then inverted to AC back. This is done so the wind turbine can operate at variable rotational speed, increasing the overall efficiency.

The rotor is connected to a coil which rotates. It is within the magnetic field of a surrounding electromagnet and connects to a split ring commutator and carbon brushes. This is part of a circuit and as the coil spins it produces current.

Every wind and solar installation is propped up by reliable nuclear and fossil fuel plants which compensate for the dangerous and unpredictable fluctuations of wind/solar output. Without nuclear/fossil fuel back up, solar and wind plants would cause life-threatening black/brown outs and voltage spikes throughout the day.

Imagine you were Al Gore. Your family owns "Gore Coal", and you want to make sure wind power never pays for itself. So you help design something which looks good, but produces very little electricity. Your worst nightmare would be wind-MILLS, which would produce LOTS of electricity, and would not need government subsidies to be built.
