Mr. Otmar Fredrick (chiefly title: Nansou Oare, b. 1922, 96 years old) narrates the account of 179 Kitti men of Pohnpei, who were sent to Kosrae for labor work by the Japanese military in August 1943 during World War II. Engaging in airfield construction and other duties, they had stayed there for more than two years until October 1945 after the end of the war. Mr. Fredrick is the last survivor of the 179 men. This narration was documented by Pohnpei State Historic Preservation Office (Field Researcher Alfredson Ladore and Assistant Public Educator Jason Barnabas) and NGO Pasifika Renaissance (Executive Director Takuya Nagaoka) on April 19, 2018. Ioakim Manuel was one of the 179 men and he was my grandfather. And I know for a fact that there is no other Pohnpeian who can match their courage and bravery. (None then, none today none ever)

My paternal grandfather (Bernard Roby)and his only brother were two of the 179 men that went to Kosrae. My grand-uncle passed away in Kosrae and grandfather came back to his family in Pohnpei. First time I went to Kosrae, my dad asked if I visited my grand-uncles grave. At the time I didn't know that I had a grand-uncle that was buried in Kosrae. These are the kind of histories that as Pohnpeians, we need to put into literature for the coming generations from now on so that we don't take for granted what our ancestors had done for us.

Heard a very similar account of the story from my grandfather, Eriot Thomsin, one of those tricked to Kosrae. He did recount his experience of having to find a way to get food especially the coconuts and even on how to stay alive when he heard that they will be killed.

Gentlemen, I feel your sorrow. I'm sure they know each other well, after all, they had to become band of brothers given the circumstances. To endure slavery during wartime, they had to become closer with one another. I'm sure my grandfather knew your grandfathers, much respect.
