Cool series this is going to be. I was a KISS fan/supporter from the mid 70's through the late 80s. My first KISS concert was the Creatures tour in Irvine California. I was there for all the ups and downs of the band and their ever changing sound. I remember getting COTN the day it was released and listening and thinking "WOW, this IS F'n HEAVY". Part one was great, looking forward to the rest. Bravo man. PS RIP Eric Carr, Bill Aucoin

Maybe tbey should've listened to Ace who was the only member writing good songs which stand out on his 78' solo album and his contributions on Dynasty & Unmasked which were good songs but I think they should've droped the poppy production and with the rite producer been made heavier and they should've tried adding distortion giving tbe songs a harder crunch punch sound especially when you consider the British invasion and what other groups like Ozzy, Judas Priest & Iron Maiden to bame a few were doing.

I was one of those KISS freaks as a kid, supporting them vehemently when people would put them down. Their Dynasty tour was my first show. Though the passion stayed for a while afterward, by the time Creatures came out, I couldn't have cared less about them anymore. I reconnected with them as a teenager, and loved them, but had to admit they weren't as cool as Judas Priest or Iron Maiden at the time. It was like I was hanging on to a piece of my childhood by remaining a KISS fan. I never listen to those 80's albums anymore.

I won't hesitate to admit I loved every single Kiss album with very few reservations. But everyone knew that the solo albums were 'off' (two were good, two were 'wtf?'), and disco was a no-go. Only die hards were still listening when Unmasked came out and even less when Music From The Elder came out. I was the only person I knew who still cared about Kiss at that point. Creatures of the Night was an amazing tour de force of heavy hitting sound. It was Kiss entering the ring with all the new British bands (NWOBHM). But again, few bothered to give Kiss another shot. It wasn't until they took off the makeup and released Lick It Up that people started paying attention again. If you listen carefully to this vid, you might notice that bandmembers often contradict themselves. They struggle between the truth and maintaining the band's image. Notice how Paul lays the blame for Elder on others...but people there at the time all agree--and this is true for all albums from 1978-1981--that Paul and Gene wanted to make what they made. Paul wanted to reach a new audience, pop radio, and wanted to impress their critics (Elder). Paul hides his own participation behind words like "going astray" and all that....but that's only because it didn't sell. Had they sold well, Paul would be saying how great and important the changes were, how the band had outgrown its limited early sound, etc etc. I'll be kind to Paul and say that whatever he's saying is true at the moment he says it, but don't expect it to necessarily be true later.

I've seen a lot of videos on KISS. This is a good one. Most of it I've heard before but then there is some perspective that I haven't. Bill Aucoin made KISS, no doubt. While they had some success without him, I think not having him around was a mistake. So much of what he started for them is still in play today and makes them millions upon millions annually. I don't think people realize how hard it is to become a success in music. I think Bill "sold his soul" not for himself but to make KISS famous. That's how much he believed in these guys, especially Gene and Paul.

On the Creatures tour the ticket sales here in Providence were so poor under 2,000 for a 12,000 seat arena that promoter Frank J Russo had to cancel the show but had anyone with a ticket and wanted to see them in Worcester which is right down the road from Providence , show up at the Civic Center and bussed to the Worcester show , that Creatures Tour for whatever reason were playing shows to near empty arenas , always liked the album they were bouncing around and experimenting with all kinds of music back then with The Elder and Dynasty it’s like they were trying to find their identity . I loathed Dynasty and The Elder when they came out but love both of those albums now they are certainly different and not for everyone though for sure , on a side note Providence’s own Vini Poncia produced Dynasty and co wrote I Was Made For Loving You and Sure Know Something and also sang back up and played keyboards , I’ve come to expect great Full In Bloom videos and got one !

Taken me almost 40 years since first hearing it and 35-37 since last playing it to realize there were some decent tunes that I passed over when younger. Atleast one tune that I used to like sounds awfully cheesy now. On Unmasked, I like almost all of Ace's tunes and a mix of the others, but years ago I felt THAT was their weakest if ignoring Solo Albums and even Dynasty is still tough to decide on. Lovegun the tune is self explanatory and the album is pretty focus on the phallus and the load. Before that and Creatures through Animalize were serious about the music though, and less confused, Asylum sounded better in the 80s. Ultimately, I went out of my way and forfeited some of my other albums and shirts to acquire The Elder on vinyl. I want to say it was a heavier Vinyl album. I could be wrong, originally played it on what is still a decent pieced together system from different quality components, but back in the day that sound was intense. I think there is still the reel to reel, but I doubt those tapes are playable anymore, especially the ones in the parents garage. Didn't realize my aunt listened to so many great bands and musicians. She must've been a bit of a partier when I was younger and she was still in High School in the middle or later 70s. I can't figure out anyone else to have gotten reel to reel with the same first name. Her 1st husband was a bit of a mad man, musician, but a bad scene. Music can be great at times. Ok, I was paragraph person here, no one needs to write one unless I'm missing something in this paragraph and a half.

The Elder was and is a fantastic album .... however... at the time it came out the pop music scene was changing. KISS in the late 70s and early 80s became totally 'pop' oriented.... disco/Unmasked and soft pop rock/Unmasked. 1980 saw the rise of the New Romantic pop movement... Duran Duran, Adam Ant and Spandau Ballet etc.... coming close behind was a new era of Heavy Rock and Metal with Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard etc. .... KISS I think were at a nexus point... 'are we a pop band?' 'We've been a pop band?' 'Are we a rock band?' 'We've been a rock band'.... 'Is there something else we can do that we haven't done and should do?' I think the ambivalent time in music was a conduit to birth The Elder..... it would never had been recorded other than for 'the times' allowing it to happen. KISS very quickly found new energy with new impetus from a rising 80s Metal scene that would see them back in demand for what they do best.... loud and aggressive rock. With new guitar players like Vinnie, John and Bruce they were on a level playing field with the new shred oriented Metal scene. Not to challenge directly what Paul and Gene have always said about the band 'we do what we want, we don't follow trends we set them'..... KISS was, according to them made in the mould of the Beatles.... KISS was no different to any other band... it had its influences... and when it became successful... it had its pressures to stay that way..... which leads to compromise and outside influence. After the success of the reunion tour it was THEN they realised..... we were at our best when we were in control of what we were doing.... and most importantly.... wore their makeup and costumes with a HUGE light up KISS logo behind the drums.... that was KISS !

Imo, Kiss should have released a double studio LP with songs from side 4 of alive 2 and the best solo LP songs and call it Dynasty. That would have been following Zep and Floyd etc,

wow, Eric sounds just like Paul. I guess Gene and Paul were happy to have another NYer in the band. Peter was also but well, he was gone so now they need another NYer to fill his shoes. KISS kind of died off when hard rock died off (basically the 90s). They started to make tons of $ again as a "classic rock" show that your mom went to but now she's bringing little Tammy to see. Bunch of cruise ship gigs.

i used to be a really hardcore KISS defender. really was. but history has proven that for many many albums , starting in 1979, KISS started chasing trends instead of setting them. they became the followers instead of the leaders since 1979, they only put out 3 or so really good albums and a bunch of weird, not good, or misguided albums. Creatures , Lick it Up, and Revenge were the last really good KISS albums. to them it became more important about chasing money (and girls for Gene) than the actual music. I'm sure they had to evolve, but animalize, asylum, crazy nights and hot in the shade were all cash grabs trying to imitate what was going on at the time . anything after revenge is awful. carnival of souls is good musically, but again, its KISS trying to capitalize on the grunge movement. Carnival should've been Revenge Part 2, and Pyscho Circus should've been Love Gun Part 2 on Steroids.

How could Ace, and the rest of the band, fail to invest in Apple and/or Microsoft stock back in the 70's? Ace was always into computers before people knew what computers were and they all had more money than they knew what to do with it back then. They'd all be billionaires today...lol

In creative ways, Ace was better off. But professionally he was lost without them. It took years to launch a solo album. Then he was consumed by drugs (check out what Trunk has to say about making Ace's second album). Trouble Walkin was excellent, almost as good as his Kiss solo album, but after that he musically disappeared for 20 years (doing only small concerts, no albums). Thankfully Ace got sober because he's been very productive over the past 15 years or so, and good stuff imo. But really, it's all too late for big success because the industry has changed so much.

Ace's "instinct" left him. He overestimated his solo record and left the band. In No Regrets he regretted that he didn't listen to his attorney. Everyone in Europe knew the huge hit "New York Groove" by the band HELLO. But Ace thought it was his creativity? What a miscalculation.

I was a kiss fan right from the beginning of 74 and in my opinion their last truly great album was rock and roll over in 77 everything after that was pretty mediocre. Love gun and dynasty had a couple good tracks on it, and the stuff they did in the 80s was pure shit. Including creatures of the night.

Come on brother. Don't do that "Part 1, Part 2, Part 8, etc." bullshit. Make the video and move on. Don't continue it. Nobody wants to have to look for the next part or wants to wait for it. Honestly, as soon as I saw that this is a part 1, I shut it off. If I'm gonna invest the time to watch it, I want to feel satisfied by the end of it or it's just a waste of time. I know I'm not the only person that feels this way.
