My mom passed yesterday, end stage COPD. One of the few joys she had was watching this channel. She loved watching you "discover" the music of her youth. She's often remark about the "sweet, funny faces" you'd make. Or "how he puts his shoulders in that shuffle." She truly loved what you are doing. Keep up the great work. You'll never know how much it meant to my mama. 💜💜💜

Nothing wrong with Carrack's own solo output, either! Try "Don't Shed a Tear" from 1987's "One Good Reason." He had a couple solo LPs before that, but that one's a good'un!

I met Paul Carrack in the early 90's, at a club he was playing at in New Orleans. My wife and I met with him after the show at Tipitinas. We all drank margaritas until about 3:30 in the morning. We told him we thought he was underrated. He has one of the best voices I've ever heard. I really don't think he knew how talented he was back then. He was a very nice guy. I still love his voice.

This was about their bass player leaving for another band, but ironically, by the time the song came out and became a huge hit, he was back with the band. I second that you should react to "Tempted" by Squeeze.

Yes, but the lyrics are very easy to interpret to be about relationship going to rocks. In this case it would have been best to leave the inspiration as a secret. :) There are some songwriters who refuse to tell where the song came from since they are aware that lyrics can mean different things to different people.

The technique used to achieve this was invented for this song and thus used for the very first time ever! Here is a very interesting documentary on how this classic song was created in the studio with their secretary doing the "Big boys don't cry" voice over :-) Go watch it. Great pop rockin' song! The lead Ace singer's name is Paul Carrack. It's great to see that Jamal and the younger crowd are really taking to these older songs. Phil Collins said this was one of his favourite top ten songs of all time. Since I've been listening to music for probably 67 years I also enjoy passing on new songs to the newbies to keep them alive. Another great band worth listening to is 'Mike and The Mechanics.' The founding band member Mike Rutherford also had a band mate named Phil Collins in Genesis. Here is a partial hit list: 1) Silent Running (Play their 6:15 long version). 2) All I Need Is A Miracle (You'll find a lot of their best songs on their 1st CD with the black lined head shot on the white cover). 3) Par Avion 4) Take The Reins 5) Hanging By A Thread 6) The Living Years 7) Nobody's Perfect 8) Call To Arms (This song and 'Silent Running' really reflect on what's taking place today). Later!

Early 1974, i think just a few weeks before this was released. Me & my mate Chris, both under age 16yr olds sneaked into the 'Thomas'a'Beckitt' a well know pub in south london (Where Muhammad Ali would train when in London) . There was an unknown band performing there that night, but i remember a huge coloured sign saying 'ACE' on the wall. Sure enough the highlight of the night was "How Long". It was amazing when the song was released & went to number 1 shortly afterwards. It's a shame that they didn't have any follow up hits. I think that the members of the group all seemed to be involved elsewhere musically. I don't even know if it was all the same musicians in the pub that performed on the hit record? I do know that of course it was still Paul Carrack singing lead vocals both times, as it was his song. He has gone on to have a great solo career & performed with many great stars & is always much in demand. I was lucky enough to see him perform with Eric Clapton on one occasion as well. But for me whenever i hear that amazing, haunting sound of the opening beat of "How Long". It always takes me back to that night in the pub as a 16 year old. Such a Fantastic memory for me 😎

Paul Carrack is one of the most underappreciated musicians out there. He was involved with so much and always gets forgotten. First Ace, then he spent some time playing keyboards for Roxy Music . Went on to The Squeeze for keyboards and some vocals, giving us a hit with Tempted. Then to Mike + The Mechanics (keyboards and sometime vocalist- he split duties with Paul Young) and dropped stuff like Silent Running and The Living Years on us. Had a solo hit with Don't Shed a Tear. He played with Roger Waters from Pink Floyd during his live stage show of The Wall tour. He was also supposed to form a band with Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmidt of The Eagles that got derailed by "hell freezing over" and the Eagles getting back together so he gave them a song he had written called Love Will Keep Us Alive to put on their comeback album which did well. The guy is just good.

Paul Carrack is the singer, later sang with Mike + The Mechanics (Mike Rutherford from Genesis). He sang on their hits "Silent Running" and "The Living Years," which you should check out if you haven't yet. Edit: BTW, no offense to the new arrangement of the band, but if you listen to those songs, make sure they're the old version and not the newer Hits version or 2019 rearrangement.

In 1973 I used to go to a club in London called "Dingwalls" in Camden Lock with a group of five other girls every Friday night for three years- this was THE place for music at that time. As soon as we arrived I would ask the DJ Nick ( Life in a Northern Town) to play this and just cruised onto the floor usually on my own as it was always early and moved to this ( you couldn't call it dancing) .. Wonderful memories of a still fantastic vocal and arrangement. Vince Power is re-opening Dingwalls this year....

Solo Carrack or with Ace, Squeeze or Mike and the Mechanics...all memorable tunes with that VOICE! "Pulling Muscles From A Shell", "In the Living Years." Ace is really known for this one (great) song; Squeeze had lots of hits before "Tempted" that deserve a turn, too, if they're not quite as smooth.
