I've had this tree for 9 years now (purchased as a 1 year graft, currently 7ft tall. I live in zone 6a Indiana/Ohio. It's only shown glimpses of white over those 9 years but mostly light green/cream color, even being grown in mostly shade. I was a little underwhelmed with this tree after buying it with the expectation of it looking "White" so this year I went ahead and dug and moved it to my moss/ shade garden area where it will get even more shade. Ill move it again in a couple years if it doesn't seem to like it there.

I have 3 ukigumos in pots. I bought them several years ago as young 4 foot trees when they were in leaf and totally white. I did this because I knew that it was then capable of producing white leaves and they've been totally white every year since. There is the occasional greenish leaf and I remove it. I've found that feeding them and fertiliser can give them green leaves and also sun rays gives them pink tones, the more sun the more the pink colour. So I keep one of mine in 100% shade and never feed it and it's 100% totally white every year. One year one of my ukigumos lost most of its leaves due to frost, when the 2nd set of leaves came through in June, they were much greener than normal, but I did feed it slightly to encourage new leaves.

I heard that fertiliser makes them green up. I have one that is so white and has been every year. I remove any green leaves that come through and never feed it, but repot every two years.

Believe it or not, I picked up a nice size specimen in Spring 2017 but it struggled for a first year or so while it got established. It has a chindo viburnum as a backdrop which really shows off the color in spring. Love this tree!!!

I have ‘Ukigumo’ and I got lucky and have it under high canopy oaks and hickories. It has been white several times over the years, but now that I know it doesn’t like to be fertilized I can avoid that and maybe get more white events. Thanks for the tips! I collected a white variegated seedling growing under my Ukigumo about 5 years ago. I’ve been growing it in a pot and it’s been white every year. Being on its own roots it a very slow grower. Unfortunately, the fall color is not too impressive.
