Living in south central texas, I planted red maple acer rubrum since April 2023, I can tell my young tree grows well so obviously it's rare I guess

Red maple does grow in similar climates to east Texas, so your tree should do well!

They aren't native to northern California although they will grow there. You might try one of the maples listed here, calscape.org/loc-california/Acer(all)/vw-list?view_style=list

SylvanGreenEarth thanks for the maple list. I already have a bunch of big leaf maples and a silver maple which grows like a weed. Just wanted to try the red maple since it is a good swamp maple.
