So I’m a white girl, I’m 38 now, grew up in a small hick town, and in the 5th grade, I lip synced this song in a talent show 😂 My teacher didn’t really pay it any attention leading up to the show, she just wanted me to write the lyrics out for her, so I did my best. I’m not even sure I rehearsed it being it was so simple while other folks had bigger things going on. So powerful. I don’t know what year this came out ( I’d take a guess at 1995 or so.) but I moved across the river from Detroit. In 1967 after the riots all the white people moved out of the inner city to the suburbs. All the business dried up and quickly all the tax money disappeared. Nothing got built, old buildings were abandoned. 60+% of the population moved away. This is the environment kids grew up in. What followed I’ll leave it up to you to figure out. RIP Coolio. Telling the truth sometimes hurts our sensitivities. Beware, remember if you look in a mirror you may not like what you see.
