Acetaminophen

Mostly widely known as Tylenol, acetaminophen surpassed aspirin in sales in the 1980s. Throughout most of the world acetaminophen is marketed as paracetamol. Originally synthesized in 1877 as a derivative of aniline dye, more than 1 in 4 adults take acetaminophen at least weekly.
Acetaminophen may be consumed by itself or in combination with cough and cold medicines, allergy pills, sleep-promoting drugs and various analgesics. Unbeknownst to most people, the total daily dose of acetaminophen remains a potential hazard. While the current maximum daily intake should not exceed 4000 mg from all sources, the actual safe dose may be significantly lower for many individuals.
Children are especially vulnerable to overdose. The correct amount of acetaminophen varies according to body weight; tablets meant for adults are inappropriate for youngsters. Adults with active or chronic impairment of liver function and those with low body weight need to lower their dose of acetaminophen. Senior citizens should follow the same advice.
Unfortunately overdoses, intended or accidental, remain quite common. Too much acetaminophen leads to potentially fatal liver failure and continues to rank as a leading cause of liver transplantation.

tlhanks, dr. landow. you are thorough as always. one question: why is acetomonphen put in oxycodone and the other prescription opoids? i remember reading a while back that it was a way to impede recreational abuse of the accompanying opoid. is this true.

Here in Australia it is known as Panadol and Panadol is no good with me as I have a tolerance to it, as I use to take it for migraines and now it doesn't do a thing for me.

There is no such thing as tolerance to the effect of paracetamol or NSAIDs, only to opioids and it varies from individual to individual!

I was definitely taking more than 4000mg for 45 days when i was working as a cart attenendant. It was all i could do for any pain i felt at the time. It was possibly the worst my body had ever felt. I only ever contributed the pain from my shitty diet.

I don't think i metabolise Paracetamol very well, I find it useless for any kind of pain or fever. Aspirin on the other hand works brilliantly for me and I get relief from all manner of moderate to even severe pain (in some situations) as well as control of high fever. I'm not sure why it works so well for me..I do take a soluble version which may expedite absorption but even so...it works really well regardless of the form. For whatever reason, I don't get much relief from Ibuprofen or Meloxicam where Naproxen works quite well for me. My body is obviously quite fickle, eh?

No, it's actually a common thing that different NSAIDs work differently for every individual, for me ibuprofen and meloxicam are completely useless while ketorolac and lornoxicam work quite well. I've never tried Aspirin though believe it or not!? Paracetamol is also effective for pain in my case thankfully.

I do like this guy's videos. He's very comprehensive. But I will tell you, it is asinine Beyond stupidity to blister pack acetaminophen. It adds to the cost dramatically. It's a cheap and affordable compound. Why do governments try to screw up the consumer's ability to medicate themselves by mandating stupid things like blister packing acetaminophen ? There's plenty of information out there for the consumer to properly use this. This video is just one example of a million that tell you how to use acetaminophen. Governments, get out of the way.
