Possums are not nasty. They're very intelligent, gentle animals who very rarely carry diseases like rabies. I have a friend who rescued an orphaned baby possum and the possum made for a very devoted companion. Raccoons hate the rain and will prefer to stay in their dens if they can, but if they're hungry enough, they'll choose food over staying dry.

Wild animals have an incredibly keen sense of smell. Most likely the reason some animals - such as the coyote - don't come to your feed station is that they detect the overwhelming human scent mixed with the food smells and the human smell meant danger so they chose to avoid the area.

That's not true. Animals don't have coded human = danger. Forest is full of different scents, also scents of predators. By Your logic the coyote would have to avoid whole forest completely, because there is practically 100% chance that the any predator was in any place of the forest. The only thing I can agree with is the sense of smell. Animals would get free food if it's possible. That's how You see all the raccoons going there. Why was the doggo not coming? Who knows. Maybe it was young one that is not brave enough and with all the raccoons he was intimidated? Maybe it wasn't hungry. We don't really know that. And we've seen bear at that place too. Maybe it was just avoiding the bear, knowing it's nearby. It could be any reason, but human scent is really improbable.

I think about that all the time. I live right near the Missouri River and there are deer everywhere, among many other creatures. We just had one of those cold snaps with the negative 20 wind chills, whenever go out in it for two minutes I think about how hardy those creatures really are, it's a struggle out there.

Not to create an argument...but...there are several factors which allowed me to properly ID this as a fox; rather than a coyote. Mainly, the length of its' legs, the shape of its' head, torso & tail. They are different from those of a coyote. Also, it would be unusual to find a coyote in a wooded//forest environment at night. I respect everyones' right to their opinion & to disagree. My opinion is not rigid. None of us will ever know with absolute certainty if it was a coyote or a fox. Respectfully, Ben

Compared to the size of the deer it would be big even for a red fox (at least the ones around where I live which for some reason are a lot bigger than the grey foxes). Where I live the coyotes actually have really bushy tails and look a lot like foxes at first glance, just a lot bigger. Like a grey fox is usually about the size of a medium sized housecat, red foxes are about the size of a big housecat, and coyotes about the size of a Blue Heeler. If it was a fox at that distance it would have appeared much smaller than the racoons but even being quite a bit back it was still bigger than the racoon in the foreground. It also had the standard back V very common in coyotes and clearly lacking the distinct dark face marks and stripe along the top of the tail that the majority of grey foxes have. It looked very much more like a coyote with a winter coat than a grey fox.
