On Saturday 3rd August 2024, Branch Line Society, in collaboration with GBRf, DC Rail, Cappagh Group and others, operated a charity railtour from Derby to Hove, taking in an interesting, if circuitous route! Raising thousands of pounds for Martin House Hospice, the passengers were kept entertained with a ramble around London, before heading to the coast at Hove. The tour started out travelling via the Midland Mainline and WCML as far as Wembley Yard, where we spot 69008 charging through Berkhamsted in the morning. We then overtake the tour as 69008 was handing over the baton to DC Rail Class 60s, numbers 60028 and 60055, to take the tour forward. We see the pair at both Imperial Wharf and Wimbledon, after it took an unusual route via Tooting, allowing us to overtake it once again.
The tour then continued to Chessington Coal Siding, becoming the first passenger train to visit the facility in over 40 years! We see the train heading back up the Chessington South branch at Tolworth, descending the steep gradient. Whilst the tour had a brief break at London Waterloo, we manage to catch up with it again at Vauxhall, this time heading towards its eventual destination of Hove. Once again, an unusual routing via Linford Street Junction, Tulse Hill and Crystal Palace allowed us to catch up with the tour one final time at East Croydon. Enjoy!
