Direct Method- the Left or Right of Arc is an imaginary line extended from your left or right shoulder. Axis is an imaginary line directly extended to your front. You getting confused with your 'arcs of fire" which the section commander will point out so you are not observing an area which is not within the sections responsibility. A mnemonic to help remember the different methods of target indication is C A A R T. Clock-ray - Hand Angles - Arcs(Direct Method) - Reference Points - Tracer.
