3:18 wrong the lense had a special teleconverter made for it that allows it to focus 1:1

Just got this lens and wanted to check whether the focusing noise was normal and happened across your video. Yep, it sounds like that 😀. Thanks for the video. Your reasoning for it is exactly why I bought it, as good as the standard 50mm lenses but also offering some macro capability whilst not being too big. My focus ring also feels extremely loose but it works.

Someone sent me this instead of a 50mm f1.8. I got it for £70 in great condition. Left it on the shelf for ages as I've been using my old Nikon 50 f1.8 bit I'm excited to try it

Spot on review, same results with my copy as well. Yeah it's noisy, so what. I manual focus when doing macro work anyway. Cheers

This reminds me of the Tamron adaptall 90mm lens (with fittings for like 3 makes). It's priced as such for its age and manual focus only but if you have peeking in your camera you can get some great shots

These Tamron macro lenses belong to the SP range which is of higher optical quality compared to the normal ones.

Im thinking about buying this for 35mm scanning. Right now I‘m using a 50mm 1.8 with extenders but corner to corner sharpness is not really good. Is corner sharpness good with this lens or should I go for a proper macro lens?

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but... Are the sample macro photos (e.g. the watch face) shot without an extension tube? With an MFD of 9" I'm confused as to how you could get close enough to your subjects to get those macro shots. Great video btw thanks for producing it!

Almost, if not all, of the photos were taken on Canon APS-C cameras. That will add a 1.66 crop factor, plus a tiny bit more for any parts that are recorded since in video mode there is a slight crop. For the watch face, it was a regular photo taken on my 80d, then cropped to fit the 2:1 video aspect ratio, and then I zoomed in to show the sharpness of the lens. No extension tubes were used for any of the photos.

It’s fluctuated in price. It could be had for about £70 about 2-3 years ago. I owned one then. I literally couldn’t sell it. I’ve just bought another. It’s doubled in price.

Bought one for 60 bucks. It's build like a turd but the images are amazing. Great for light weight traveling.

The extender for this lens make the EF 100mm f2.8L a secret weapon. I bought this 50mm macro off of facebook. Sold the lens, kept the convertor and wow. Amazing.

It's an excellent lens - one of the best Canon fifties IMO (and I've owned 'em all...). I've had one for almost 25 years and use it regularly for product shots. This is absolutely where it excels - slow AF becomes irrelevant. Shoot at f2.5 and it produces beautiful soft backgrounds and colours that blow away the 1.8 and 1.4 - great for nature shots and portraits. It's a lens for slow, considered photography and it's a bit of a bargain.

Not sure why you mention the FD lens in a video about EF lenses. They are literally THE WORST legacy mount for EF bodies. Way better off with a Nikon 105 macro, a Tamron 90 of some variation, or if you're using a crop body, just get a used EFS 60.
