Hey! I'm the guy that designed the low-poly Pikachu (aka the toy)! I really like seeing some of my early designs used as examples of (almost) useless models. For years I believed that, but some time ago I found out that those models got hundreds of kids out there interested in 3D printing and digital fabrication. As you show in the video, 3D printing toys is just one of the thousands of things you can do with this technology, and that's really inspiring. I'll be showing this video to my students from now on!

Hi, I just wanted you to know that your design is also used by me in testing my 3D library on STM32 microcontroller - mostly because it's low poly and that makes not too much triangles to draw. That was the first thing on Thingiverse that came up when I searched for "low poly" models. Here is how it looks: kzbin.info/www/bejne/inWmk3eXoc6LZpI
@tortinhafofinha8537 Жыл бұрын
I don't find that optimal tho, I like the idea of kids making their own toys but with real tools instead of digital ones. Honestly the process of 3d printing is kinda boring and is much less challenging and interactive than other things, but it's definitely safer(even safer than legos lmao). Sorry if I sound cynic, I do appreciate the way people have been pushing this technology to it's limit and it just gets better and better

I have a background in 3d modelling. Bought my first 3d printer in May this year. I now have a VERY successful 3d printing business. So yes, it's useful :) Plus is stupidly fun to figure out exactly what you can print with no supports (it's a challenge I have given myself) and ways to use the printer that others wouldn't normally consider. I am really enjoying watching you use your 3d printer for your various projects. It's wonderful to watch traditional woodworking combined with a 'new' technolgy.

This is the kind of use for which 3D printing was designed, and it's the kind of use I can respect. I work at a school running the shop. However, I don't run the 3d printing area, and I'm so glad I don't, because all it gets used for is printing little figures and toys from Thingiverse. That kind of use of 3d printing has always struck me as similar to downloading someone's amazing Photoshop project, printing it on a color printer, and then taking the credit for making it.

Back in the "bad old days," many objects were cast or vacuum formed to models made by "pattern makers.' They mostly used simple hand tools. Now the "model" is designed with computer graphics and the parameters are sent to a computer driven milling machine (3,4,5? axes) or your 3D printer.

As someone who owns 2 3d printers I have actually gone back and fourth on this with myself. I used to think it wasn't as useful but now days that I can design functional prints I have to say yes. No is it needed to live or make life way better? No. But the amount of small things I have printed that help me out day to day are kinda surprising. The thing I use the most is a simple wallet/keyholder I designed thats screwed to the side of my dresser and it works great. I also have an ecig that has the charge port on the bottom of it and thats a total pain since you'd have to lay it on its side to charge and leak eliquid everywhere so I got a right angle usb cable and made a cradle and it works great. There are tons of these little things around my house and office that make life a bit easier.

3D printing in itself can indeed be highly useful, but as someone who's diving into it since half a year I might add that it opens up a whole world on its own with different materials, their mechanical properties, slicer settings, (manual) bed leveling and not to speak of fixing problems. At least valid for most entry level printers up to €500. Might (and should) be a different thing for the 4-digit priced Ultimakers. Nonetheless I reckon these skills on how to operate a printer similarly mandatory for the times ahead like buying a PC back in the 80/90s. Good content nonetheless, thanks Alex.

I grew up with a father who was an aircraft engine machine tool operator and later spent decades at a company that sold industrial plastics and non-ferrous metals. Put those two with a few of our shared hobbies and I absorbed a good foundation on materials suitable for a given application. He's been gone 30 years yet it is coming in handy again with 3D printing since I prefer to only make reliable functional small parts. My weak spot is learning proper 3D CAD. I don't put in the time required because I self diagnosed that I have the hobby form of ADD.

I use 3d printing for a high variety of applications designing custom pieces mainly, most of which I later cast to aluminum-low carbon steel prototyping puzzles is so great too, it is even great for printing little toys it is one of the greatest tools for prototyping, and since my ender 3 with all upgrades and 2 Kilograms of filament costed 250 euros, the investment payed for itself in a couple of month (not to say a couple of weeks) I literally started printing the same day I got it, very easy, lots of sources and data available, very little trouble, so this question is a no brainer, a 3d printer and 3d printing are incredibly useful

I use my 3D printer to make bits and bobs that are a Pain in the Tuckas, to make but make the major components out of other materials. . I bought one for making tpu parts for my fpv drones, now want to organize my workshop/studio. Any filament recommendations ? I'm assuming you use different materials and/or brands for structural parts, storage containers, etc.? Also if you want a good filament for camera/protective cases Sainsmart makes an awesome TPU with variety of colors. Its fairly rigid while still being flexible/absorbs vibrations.
