She did wear heavy makeup. It was not upto her. It was a must during filming. Especially back in those days when digital filtration was not available. Makeup is not just to make you look more beautiful or to cover your flaws. On set makeup is done mostly to highlight / enhance your features. On set, they shoot under strong lights from all sides & under so much lights from every direction, features become blurry. For that reason on set heavy makeup is used. To make the features prominent even under so much lights. Without makeup on, all faces will look similar. A white mass with two black orbs. Plus this particular song was originally in black and white. It has been colorized recently. In digital software, artists have basically painted the colours on frame by frame. So what you are seeing here is basically a painted version. That's why everything looks so uniform & even. You cannot guess how their original skin was from this.
