I’ve never seen it either, but I don’t think that’s the point he was making. “It was all a dream” situations have no impact on the world inside the story. What he was saying is that the woman’s paranoia would lead her to take actions that would then lead to her death, even though they weren’t planning to kill her like she thought. That is actually a super interesting ending for a character. “It was all a dream” isn’t interesting because it removes the stakes from the actions that were taken, but Noel is specifically talking about her facing consequences for the actions she takes from her paranoia.
@lucsails Жыл бұрын
Noel had a poor take on White Lotus’s ending in my opinion. To an extent disagree with almost everything he had to say but I only have enough energy to talk about one scene. (Spoilers:) I felt that the way that they shot Tanya’s boat squad-wipe scene was innovative. Shakeycam is always hit or miss but I honestly think they did it well here, because it actually added to the anxiety of a dark reality finally being confirmed. (A reality which NEEDED to be layed out blatantly with all the stuff in the bag to be realized, cause Tanya’s character needed undeniable reasoning for doing what she did next.) You can see Coolidge is practically shooting with her eyes closed, so with her, we are blind to her targets. I liked that the camera doesn’t turn around, so with that each step forward there’s an increasing fear that at any moment we are going to be front row witnesses of her getting shot by someone else who’s armed, we think to ourselves why else would the camera stay on her for so long? What makes it awesome though is that you just hear the body’s DROP. Shot after shot we know Tanya is absolutely merking with audio alone. I don’t think it had anything to do with budget, I think it was very clearly a fresh artistic choice to hide the action and focus on her anxiety. As a bonus we get a super long shot of Coolidge popping caps.

Hard disagree on Noel on Tanya's closeup, shooting the gun. I think it was wonderful that they didn't show the violence of a bullet going through the gay guys' bodies. We're in for a ride through Tanya's perspective, feeling her feelings, flighting for her life with her. Then the camera spins & then you realize that she was actually shooting the folks, because when it was happening, you thought she was just scaring them away. It was a wonderful scene, with the punctuation of "Is Greg having an affair?"

If anyone is interested, as someone who just completed the ketamine treatment (nasally,not injected) I recommend it. You can do therapy with it and “have breakthroughs” while you’re high but it’s mainly for breaking mental patterns associated with anxiety and depression so you don’t get trapped in a specific way of thinking. It is not for everyone as it is expensive and takes a moderate time commitment, and probably will not be possible for people who have to work a 9-5. But for me I think it was a treatment that drastically improved my quality of life along with therapy and regular medication. And I can attest to “fighting it” giving you a bad trip, was not fun but it becomes way easier the more you do it. I’m really glad y’all were able to talk about it and normalize therapies like that, because there is a bunch of stigma around them. I hope your treatment goes well Ben!

I know this episode came out months ago, and idk if anyone cares, but I've actually completed an entire Mindbloom program (the medicinal ketamine company) and it was fucking life changing for me. I have veeeery treatment resistant depression & anxiety and was kept on the same antidepressant for 4 years, which is NOT how antidepressants are actually supposed to be used. Psychiatrists unfortunately usually care more about making money, so they'll keep you on antidepressants for your whole life if they can, but most antidepressants will stop working after 1-2 years because they don't cure depression & anxiety, they only treat the symptoms long enough for you to find something else that helps you. The ketamine, however, works sort of similarly to how both psilocybin and meditation are used to treat depression & anxiety. You take a dose that gets you somewhere between a microdose and an actual psychedelic experience, which will artificially relax you and quiet your mind. The treatments are done in conjunction with a meditation ritual around them, which you're then supposed to practice WITHOUT taking the ketamine. Basically, the ketamine creates new neuropathways in your brain that you then can learn to access without ketamine, and the neuroplasticity lasts for months after you stop the treatments, helping you re-train your brain to practice healthier habits and be able to relax and quiet your mind on its own. It's the only thing that's actually ever helped my depression & anxiety, and even though I have a very addictive personality, I've never had any cravings for ketamine or withdrawals when the program ended. HIGHLY recommend for people who haven't had much luck with psychiatric drugs, but bear in mind it can be fairly expensive since it isn't covered by insurance.
