Aci Castello near Catania, in Sicily. April 2022 walking tour in 4k. (With Captions)
Hi my friends!!! Welcome to Aci Castello!.
🏨 Don't miss our article on where to stay in Catania 👉 italy-together...
Aci Castello, an ancient fishing village located 15 meters above sea level, just 10 kilometers from Catania.
The name Aci Castello derives from the castle of the same name built in 1076 by the Normans on a nearby lava stone hill.

Historically, a first castle was built in the 7th century AD. by the Byzantines on a pre-existing fortification of the Roman period, perhaps of 38 AD, called Castrum Jacis and aimed at the defense of the population from raids.
In the Middle Ages it was the fulcrum of the development of the surrounding area.
In the Norman period, the first village was founded around the castle. Around 1170 the village was completely destroyed by a terrible earthquake and only in 1530 was it rebuilt and repopulated. Over the years, while maintaining its ancient origins, it has gradually transformed into a prestigious seaside resort, a destination for many tourists.

I worked in Catania for a short time in the 1990s for an American company contracting at ST Microelectronics. I stayed at the Presidential Hotel in Aci Castello. Every night I went down to the square and tried to hang out with the locals. Around 9 pm the pizzeria opened. I got a small pie, a half liter of the house wine and sat at the picnic table outside. It was awesome even though it was damn hot and humid. The fishing boats were in and everyone were entertaining one another right there in the square. It was like being in a long ago era. One evening I met a couple of Americans and we decided to go to Mt. Etna the next day. We drove up to the visitors center and paid for a tour. However the tour was in Italian and French so we decided to climb to the apex of Etna. It was August and there was snow near the visitors center. I remember the higher you climbed the warmer the ground became and the louder the volcano became. At some point the sulfur smell started to choke us but we continued. The booming from the lava spitting volcano became very loud. The ground is not solid as stones of warm lava were there for your feet to sink into. I came within maybe 10 yards of the summit. The air is thin. The sulfur smell is great and the ground is very warm. You could easily see the bits of molten lava spraying out from Etna’s mouth. It was time for me to descend as fear overcame me. My other two companions climbed to the summit before coming down. It took us over an hour to climb up and 5 minutes to descend back to the visitors center.

Hi Marco, loved that you tried the closed captions on this video! As we watch KZbin on the TV, it's the only option to read the details - it doesn't have the options the PC does. Grazie! 😀

Ciao! It has been awhile since I have commented on one of your videos. I hope you are doing well. Aci Costello is a beautiful city! I currently live in Firenze where I am studying Italian until Oct. 2022. Then I am considering moving further south, possibly Sicily, and somewhere right alongside the sea. Aci Costello is one of the places that I have looked into. Can you suggest other cities, towns, or villages to live full time right on the sea but still within walking distance of all services. Restaurants, farmacia, markets, etc. Grazie mille! Paul in Firenze
