Acid-base indicators are dyes or dye mixtures that are used to detect the presence of acids and bases. When an acid reacts with a metal, hydrogen gas is produced and salt is formed. When a base reacts with a metal, a salt with a negative ion composed of the metal and oxygen is formed.
