I feel like their taste has not developed enough to appreciate whatever it is novels like CoHo's do for them but understand they are in no way the crème de la crème of literature. It's like a toddler taste buds except there's no parenting control to fix it lol. Bc i get loving bad books while aware they are not great by any means, i do, but the delusion of thinking they are actually genius and groundbreaking and alike Jane Austen novels is so unserious and depressing.

rebecca yarros' ignorance about scottish gaelic, the minority language she chose to pull direct words from to use in her book, is enough for that to go straight to jail for me. she called it the wrong language and wildly mispronounced every word when asked about them, and said they were right bc that's how *she* wants it to be said like girl... those are words that exist in a real language that you are using, she clearly has zero respect for that. she's not the only author that's done this, not even the first to do it w scottish gaelic, but she's still on my personal shit list for that lmfao

"Fourth Wing" was right to the deepest, darkest jail for me! I can't even begin!!! It was interesting to hear your opinions on everything. There is a new wave of readers that are beginning to notice an increasing change in the publishing industry. The term I hear going around is "fast fashion" but referring to books, I guess? Anyways, it's a noticeable difference where now there are on sight spelling errors, bad scenes, writing, character development, or even similar scenes from other books (near plagiarism), but to push out the book, it's overlooked. The stories aren't as deep, emotional or even remotely linking with the readers that wanted a GOOD story, and for those seeking that world-diving experience, they are struggling. For authors trying to put out a name, it's difficult with fast fashion books swarming social media. But anywhooos, thanks for another fantastic video, Hannah!

I'm seeing a lot of people saying things like "oh gosh I used to love Twilight/ACOTAR/etc before I realized how bad they were", and I _do_ think it's worth remembering that 'bad' books are popular for a reason. Bad books get popular because they do something well. Twilight has a really strong voice that makes it flow very easily. The first couple ACOTAR books do a really good job introducing their setting, characters and relationships in such a way that it's really easy to blaze through them. Even the wizard books make for pretty fun wish fulfillment--you're magic and famous and rich and all your enemies are fat (a Mortal Sin, obviously*) and dumb and ugly. You save the world and get _all_ the school points. You're so good at sports. The principal gives you special treatment and everyone wants to be your friend. A guy who already wants to kill you happens to be Wizard H!tler, so you get to feel progressive and shiny while actually doing next-to-nothing to be an ally. Like, there's something there for everyone. So, like, by all means, engage with your old faves critically! But also, I don't think it made you dumb or clueless that you used to like them. 'Bad' is mostly determined by which qualities you prioritize when you take stock of a book. "Easy reading" or "fun wish fulfillment" aren't worthless qualities at all. *this is big sarcasm and i do not condone this take

I totally agree! I think a lot of these books are super accessible and have a main character you want to root for-or be. Most of the ones I’ve read are really emotionally indulgent (whether you’re enjoying yourself or are hate-reading) which inspires a strong response and generates attention. It’s super important to talk about the deep flaws that any story contains (for a multitude of reasons, but especially when it’s aimed towards minors or where the lines of consent are blurred). Educating about problematic traits in a book is constructive. Hating or shaming people for enjoying these stories is not.

I also think you tend to overlook certain things when you are younger. I read acotar way back when I was 13 and it was first released. But when I read the newer books I began noticing all the issues with the narrative and the themes, which I personally disagree with. So I completely understand why the books might appeal to younger readers.

I don't know... some of what these books "do well" is manipulate the psychological flaws of their audience. Romance/erotica books can get away with things other genres cannot because if it makes its audience hot and bothered, they will let a good amount of questionable things slide- especially teenagers with little experience with real life relationships and less developed critical thinking skills

The weird part of Fourth Wing is that I enjoy hate reading it??? It’s so predictable I’m just challenging myself to see how many things I can get right and it’s not hard. I got the last minute twist the first time the character was even mentioned because I’m pretty sure the author stole it from Red Queen. I’m just having fun with it at this point.

I can't even say for certain what my top three leaste favourite books are. But one thing I know to core of my being is that the popularity of Fourth Wing make me irrationally angry. Yes, it's not the worst thing I've read but the rage that fills me when I think of how little effort Yarros put into it is pure. Kind of like those Balenciaga towel skirts marked at ridiculous prices simply because they can. And to add even more fuel to my firey hatred, I feel confident that this is something that only a very specific demographic can get away with.

The prose, I think, is the only reason I was able to get through the book without putting it down. It is engaging and beautifully written- vividly so, and Yanighara’s vocabulary is top notch, along with the way she strings sentences together and embeds really good metaphors into the book. But the issue isn’t the writing- the issue is the content, the lack of research, the grotesque obsession with making Jude’s life as MISERABLE as possible, the gratuitous violence, the number of gay men that die for no reason, and mostly everyone in Jude’s life died except his parents and JB. You can clearly tell that the author hadn’t done research even before she’d admitted to it. I love violent books- I’ve read exquisite corpse- but this was excessive and unnecessary, and genuinely such a chore to get through some scenes where you can tell that the author just fucking hates Jude.

The coho hate is very valid tbf. Here for it, second it, encourage it - and yes, if you enjoy sth, don’t let others take that joy away from you, but when it’s romanticising abuse, etc., then the hype is just too much (and deeply unwarranted imo). And being annoyed with the success of shite (criminal) storytelling - oh so relatable.

The fact that most of Colleen Hoover’s books were wattpad fics originally 😭 that’s how she can publish books so fast bc it’s just “editing” them lol , but with Verity she apparently finished writing it like 3 or so days before it was released and I’m just HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE/ALLOWED?! 😭 and also the fact that verity is such pro-life propaganda it makes me physically ill and the extra chapter just makes it worse

i truly believe that your videos brought back my love for reading. i was depressed from a young age and lost nearly all passion for it, just stayed glued to my phone, and while i did read hours and hours of mediocre wattpad fiction, i could never bring myself to pick up an actual novel. i started an english literature course this year on a whim, and i am so, so glad i did. thanks for being with me on this journey!

I am SO GLAD that someone finally talked about the fact that Divergent isn’t actually good!!!! There are multiple things wrong with this book, but no one noticed it because they where blindsided by the “feminist” unnecessary revolution leader. From the books I have read from this list, you called it perfectly. PREACH QUEEN!!!!!👑👑👑

I also hated A Little Life. Over 700 pages and for what?! It starts off and is even summarized as a story about 4 college friends and it very quickly becomes just about two, really. You get like 1 chapter about the other two and theyre very brief. Meanwhile, while youre wondering if youre ever going to get more substance on those two characters, the real main character is having to go through horrific and traumatizing events left and right FOR NO REASON. It's just torture porn. It offers very little disscusions about adolescence, relationships, and just about the human condition in general and for a book to be almost 1000 pages, you would THINK that it would have something more of interest. Nope. Just yuck.

I just finished In Memoriam by Alice Winn, it was the best book I’ve read this year. I’d be so interested to hear your perspective on it. It is very heavy so to anyone who wants to read it trigger warnings may be good since it is set in WW1, but I feel the characters and the morality of the book were really compelling. I’ve just started the last tale of the flower bride, i’m not super into it yet but the mysterious atmosphere is keeping me going. I’m hoping I end up loving it

I remember vividly reading most of these books when I was 13/14/15 and honestly I think I really enjoyed most of them - the Twilight era, Selection era, Divergent and ALSO Colleen Hoover was popular (less than today) back then - I also forgot I read most of these until this video (its been years) and now I'm honestly revisiting all of these books and I'm just....shocked :Ddd Now I can really see the issues some of them are portraying to the readers and not in a good way, I'm also studying gender studies at uni now so I honestly don't think I will ever enjoy any of these books ever again (but I'm glad!) :D I've also never thought about the pro-life aspect of Breaking Down! Thank you for this video, I will now spend my evening happily reading about all of these books and why are some of them quite problematic.

my most hated book of all time is a book called Wildfire by Carrie Mac, i read it a few years ago and the entire time i thought it was the literal most stupid thing ever. its basically about these two teenagers who go on a hiking journey, say they are good at wilderness, and then proceed to break every single rule about being safe while camping, and all the emotional beats it was trying to hit were entirely drowned out by the sheer stupidity of it all. it drove me absolutely insane and not in a good way.

Agree with a lot of these. The only thing I will say is a lot of people who hate on HP and the Cursed Child forget that it's a play and that it's not really meant to be read. I haven't actually seen the play, but from what I've heard, the sets, the costumes, the special effects and actors really do make it a great show and the actual plot is the weakest thing about it. Does it add to the HP story? No. Do I consider it canon ? Also no, as it wasn't even written by JK Rowling. I feel like it's an addition to the franchise, like the Very Potter Musical, or even the Fantastic Beast Films. To enjoy for more magic but not part of the original series. I think we all mistook it for an 8th HP book which it isn't. I don't think it's enjoyable to read, but I do still want to see the play as it is supposed to be pretty cool, so I wouldn't say it was a cashgrab. For me anything that isn't the 7 books is separate. The movies, Fantastic Beasts, the play etc is just all bonus content to enjoy or not. I don't think it was necessary to publish the script though, same with the fantastic beasts script, apart from being a collectors item, not to be read.
