Planking has been a very fun challenge though a bit of a challenge it has been. Learning to fit the oak planks to each other has its intricacies. We need to make sure the plank fits well fore and aft but also that the bevels match so that we can put in a good bead of cotton caulking. All of this is being done with thick, unruly oak planks!
Once we finish these last broadstrakes, which will be the last oak planks, we will be moving on to cedar planking. Cedar, being a much lighter wood, is likely going to be much easier to work with. We are very much looking forward to seeing the difference this makes. But, before we get to those, we will have to wrap up a few more tasks... but that's for another video!
In the mean time, we come across a few challenges with this last oak strake that we had not anticipated. But in Acorn to Arabella fashion, we just figure out the best way for us to just keep moving forward and making things work!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I really love that at the beginning you were a carpenter and and photographer and now you're both boat builders.

What I like best besides the boat building is there is no drama, just a bunch of nice folks working together. Thank you for that, very refreshing in such a divided world.

Cool to see Alix take over more difficult woodworking tasks with each new episode

It's great to see Alix is so much more comfortable working on the boat. Before he acted as Steve's labourer. Now hes tackling jobs on his own. He also seems far more confident using the tools.

Constantly in awe of your project but also your materials. The ray fleck in the quarter sawn white oak planks is awesome! Materials that any Arts & Crafts cabinetmaker would die for.

Those curves are starting to show up better and better. Especially for those with limited or no spacial awareness/vision. Looking great. Can't wait until the planking is done, then the fairing of the outer edges.

Every week you both become more amazing. Beautiful progress, the quarter sawn oak broadstrake was simply too beautiful for words. Thanks for the video and the time it takes to put this all together

Fantastic to see the lines of the ship taking shape, love that final camera angle looking from the bow down along the port and starboard garboards (couldn't resist saying that!)

It never ceases to amaze me your dedication and love for this project, how much you learn. Who new a little planking would take weeks. Blows me away. A2A is what I look forwa4d to on Friday night.

All that popping and creaking of the oak.. have you guys imagined the tranquility of those noises as the ocean pushes it around under a blanket of silent stars?

Amazing woodworking once again your attention to detail and overall quality control is inspirational . I keep expecting to hear " "ah that's good enough " but you always take off all those clamps and give it the fine tuned fit .

In all honesty I do believe that you both are doing your best and not slacking in any way. Alex's talents are more video technical but he does a fair day's work in the boathouse too. No slight to either one of you has ever crossed my mind. I'd love to be able to come over and lend you some of my labor but I live too far away for that. Peace, love and happiness to all!
