Schoeps for sure. The Neumann would be great, if it would not have that bump in the highs. 😞 I've bought the "new classic" (possibly -- we'll see if it turns out that way) Austrian Audio CC8, which I find better than the KM184.

In this video, I preferred the Schoeps CMC 6 and the Shure SM137, but most of the mikes were fine (maybe the NT5 wasn't quite up to the other ones). One of my favorite SDC that I use for acoustic guitar is the Sennheiser MKH 40. I also own a few KM 184 and I prefer the sound of the MKH 40 for acoustic guitars.

Man, this is incredibly helpful as I've been condenser shopping. It helps that you're a good player and get the most out of your guitar. Most of these sound great in their own right. The AKG has the best highs and a really nice mellow sound but I prefer the warmer sound of the Shure's and the KM 184. The KSM 137 overall sounds great but was maybe a little too boomy at times. The Rode NT5 wasn't the best in any particular sound area but has a nice balance and is definitely the winner in overall value no doubt. The SM81 or KM 184 are the best balanced and my vote is honestly a tossup. The KM184 has great low end, just enough where it's not too boomy but the lows actually sound deeper on the SM81 and the SM81 has slightly better highs. I am heavily leaning towards the SM81 now. It's more in my price range (unless I go for an Ear Trumpet Labs Louise or Josephine which I can record vocals and a guitar with.

Thank you so much for this excellent review and comparison! Your presentation should stand as a model, very well structured and getting straight to the essence, very helpful. It helped me to eventually make my choice (listening on good headphones): As somebody already said before, the Shure KSM 137 and the Schoeps are top and sound quite similar, while in my perception the KSM 137 even has a "sweeter" response on the low strings (this becomes more apparent in your other comparison between KSM 137 and Rode NT5). So thank you once again and I wish you much success with your channel, to which I have just subscribed, of course! Best regards from Switzerland.

It would depend on the application, but generally the Schoeps were the most natural. But the KM184 sounded great too. Then after that, the SM81. The KSM137 would be nice for a softer track, folk, Elliott Smith style singer songwriter material, soft fingerpicking or where you wanted the guitar less prominent. Was not a big fan of the 451 or NT5, found them light in the bass and low-mids, and overly bright, almost flinty. I only really like the 451 mixed with SM57 for snare, or other applications where you wanted to add brightness. Like maybe on closed mic on a dark hi-hat or ride, when paired with Coles 4038 ribbons on overhead. The 451 might be nice on a cedar top nylon guitar too, especially if positioned quite close and it was played in softer songs, Bossa Nova etc..

They all sound good to me, although the NT5 is not in the same league as the others. My favorites were the Schoeps and the KSM137. @miguelpessanha2 ай бұрын
451 - My favourite, gives you everything you need in the mix. A bit scooped and airy but not harsh. KSM137 - Most balance and real. Focused mids. KM84 - Less low end than the previous, more focused on the high mids. SM81 - Flatter than the KSM with more extended low end, but the biggest difference you hear is in the transients. It has a transformer, and unlike the others which have very fast transient response, it makes the transients more subdued / smeared, softer feel. Might work well in situations where you want to soften the transients like spoken word, brass, not so much for acoustic guitar on busy mixes where you need the sound of that pick attack. Rode NT5 - Not in the same league, a bit harsher and tougher in the high mids. What was your favourite?
