Acoustic panels effect: Cheap room treatment

Acoustic treatment: four step of the process in making our studio sounds better. Total of panel used: 36mq (about 118 ft.) plus the bass traps it cost me around 500€
I do not sponsor any company of panels in any way, please beware of false advertising.
A live recording, to get an idea of the sound properties of the room in action: • Yellow Submarine - Pun...
Listen trough a pair of headphones or a good set of speaker to ear best the differences in sounds.
The mic used in this test are a pair of built-in stereo mics of a panasonic Lumix TZ-10 shooting at 720p.
Thanks for your support!

BUT - if you listen on monitors, you'll hear the false sense of security it gives you. Most of the trapping has been in the upper regions. There is very little trapping of the low mids and bass end - this will give you a very skewed picture. Still - an effective demo.

Bass traps help you absorb standing waves and low frequencies in the corners. It barely has influence on the snare, but it will fix your kicks, toms and basses.

Thank you for making this. Most videos about this are produced narrative pieces that don't really clear up much. I looked for "Amazon bass trap empty room" an saw this and it is PERFECT. Every treatment step is shown and heard starting with a really terrible empty room. That's all I needed. That's probably all anyone needs. Thank you so much.

Thank you for posting this. We are going to make changes to a new meeting room at our church. It has a concrete floor, metal ceiling, and drywall on the walls. It's 100 ft long (about 33 meters), 18 feet tall, and 40 feet across. You cannot have a decent conversation at 3 meters away. Seeing the differences in the steps encourages me that we can improve the room just by covering 30% of the surfaces.

I am in the process of treating a studio myself. This video is without a doubt the best demo I've seen of the effects of room treatment. The room is definitely a worst case scenario with all the hard surfaces and the choice of using a snare drum (wide range of frequencies) was a great idea! Thanks for posting this.
@drehardin

This video was on point. Others have full mixes going and when played through speakers its still somewhat controlled so you never truly see the affect the room has on sound. Great approach. One snare - add treatment - compare.

I noticed that too. I think the only solution is to go 50% checker board all the way around the room, and use a thick throw rug directly under the drum set. Other than that the difference was night and day. My claim to fame is pure electrical feeds and uncontaminated data lines to the monitor room.

Very interesting comparison. This video shows the effect of even smal bass traps, which some people believe are inneffective. In my opinion the result is your room sounds a bit dead to me, but that's purely a matter of taste and of the final use you want to make of this room. As a rehearsal room i think this works nicely, if had to record drum in this room i would choose a more in between solution (given the original sound shows too much reverberations).

Jose, I've read of people using a product called Seal And Peel by DAP. it's a temporary weather caulk that, supposedly, has a pretty good adhesion to it but still comes off fairly clean if needed. You could try that. There are a lot of products you could use to stick the foam on the walls but it all comes down to how permanent you want the installation to be.

Great demo. I did feel the first demo was full of life. After treatment the drummer would have to use more force to play with more life with the music they are playing.The treatment showed how it can kill the life of the sound.Very interesting. Adsorption treatment would have been better. That foam kills the sound.Still great demo. Sound treatment is tricky thing. Corner Bass traps was the best thing.
@GeorgeWhittam
@GeorgeWhittam 10 жыл бұрын
This is a great demo, nice work! I can't say your treatment is cheap, but I guess compared to alternative materials it could be a lot more expensive. Just a tad bit of diffusion to break up the last bit of "ping-ponging" and you're solid.

I think installing them on movable boards with a base or hanging from ceiling / walls so one can quickly adjust how much life is in the room sound... you'll have a dynamic space then and you wont get repeating nuances when multitracking in the same room. characteristics of a room can multiply otherwise and if they're not nice, then you're making a record that won't sound good... it's not something one can eq out because they're more complicated and influence other nice frq by comb filtering.
