Taking me back to the mid 80's when I acquired a pair of these fabulous speakers.

Back in the day, every publication practically used the AR 9 as a reference when reviewing speakers. They were/are legendary.

These are great speakers. I have a pair that I have upgraded with better components over time and sound even better than the original configuration. It's my humble opinion that in today's world (2023), and all things equal (source, preamp, pwr. amps, etc.) I do not think that anything under $10K can even get close to competing with them. From the crossovers to the design, these were and are truly a masterpiece.

Videos on youtube just can't do these speakers justice. These AR9's sound fantastic. The AR9LS have a slightly more subdued highs and the AR9 TSW 910 have forward and rear firing 12" woofers. Add them all together and you really do have heaven on earth.

Decent kit but adding some space between those AR´s would do wonders

such a pity that this really innovative company did not make it.... fantastic loudspeakers and that turntable was the basis most copied..Thorens, Linn, Ariston...the list goes on...

The AR manual says to set up these speakers "Asymmetrically in your room to insure the smoothest response" I been setting up mine like this for over 40 years and it really does make a difference.

I have had my AR9's for 38 years (@ Jan 2019) and apart from the foam surrounds on the drivers (replaced once so far) I have had no problems at all! Good beefy units that perform well even by today's standards.I worked @ AR in the UK from 1975 to 1982 and I used to test these and other speakers in our anechoic chamber. They weigh 150 lbs each if I remember rightly.Mine are spaced approx. 11ft apart and are part of my surround system. My two rears are AR18's.

empeethreeman wow! I have these and also the ar90’s and love them. How do they compare to modern high end speakers? And how do they rate in terms of distortion? Thanks

@@juddyman80 I was given a pair of AR 9 few months back. Spent a little bit of time re-foamed the surrounds of the subs and also repaired the broken voice coil of one the tweeters. I augmented the speakers with a pair of super tweeters and these speakers sound just great. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3XWko2CfMyAbtE

Much has been written about placement of AR9s. In this configuration, you would have to sit approximately 3 to 4 feet directly in front of the Mac Stack in order to get a proper stereo image. The manual states that these units function best when placed nearly zero inches from the back wall and at least three feet from an adjacent side wall. This is a good starting point, you can fine tune and adjust according to your listening ear. Small placement adjustments yield obvious results. Asymmetrical placement usually rewards the listener with the best results. Have fun with your experimentation. You can always return them to a previous location.

you can Never evaluate speakers when u r listening to them via a PC speakers, these ARE the early AR9s with the side firing woofers n they are very critical in how you place them I got the later AR9LS models with the split grills with a 10 inch down firing woofer n a 12 inch forwards firing woofer and with a good heavy amp/pre amp able to drive them they give you a sound from heaven
