This video (a piece edited from the original hour-and-a-half-long session) was created by Gustavo Matamoros. It is both. a composition and a document of the process used to capture the sound signature of a particular architecture. Though interesting in itself as an artistic experience, the information generated by this process is also crucial to the development of strategies for the creation of site-specific acousmatic installations and for designing sound art exhibitions. The data collected in this video was used by Matamoros to curate and fine tune the various works included in his exhibition, SOUND curated for the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach.
For example, for his piece titled Bass Soundfield, Russell Frehling worked with ambient waveforms, extracting only the very highest partials available in the noise print contained within the audible spectrum, in effect, dissociating this sound material from its familiar context and experiential cues. What remained were remarkably ethereal bits that interacted with the room in captivating yet confounding ways.
