The dogs aren't illusory. He just casts disintegrate on them at the end when they "disappear" in the cage, and then summons random dogs (again) next time. Darkmagic is the secret BBEG; every lost dog you thought wandered off? Summoned to his dog fighting arena. Despicable. But he says it's somehow a lot cheaper than using illusory dogs.

Aren't all illusions technically made of shadow matter (some more substantial than others)? Well there are sentient, fully aware creatures like shadow dragons that are made of shadow matter, so you could argue that any sufficiently realistic illusion is fully capable of experiencing real pain and suffering before having its life cruelly snuffed out…

What's crazy is that at work last night, we found crystal stalactites hanging from the ceiling in one fourth floor room, and crystals down the wall and chalkboard and all over the desks and floor, none of which was there the night before. so no environmental issues in an educational building would surprise me. Like I just saw crazy sh*t in real life, so what's magic gonna do that's crazier? (The water softener system in the attic failed horribly and dumped concentrated salt water into the floor below.)
