Becky, When you plant your vegetables you should plant some flower with them, because the flowers draw the insects away from the vegetables. The Amish plant there gardens with flowers around them. They even plant sunflowers around their field crops.

Becky you should ask tree cutters to deliver wood chips for your garden to help control weeds. You may even be able to find leaves too. You may even be able to get them for free. It will cover your soil, and when you cover for the winter the woodchips will break down and turn into compost in your beds.
