This is why I looked forward to potatoes every year when I had a garden. When I was pregnant with my son I had a lot of back problems and of course everyone tells you to sit and apply heat or ice but the sitting just made it worse and I also got really early braxton hicks in my 3rd trimester which only got worse if I sat or laid down so one of my biggest reliefs was getting up and moving around in my garden, digging up potatoes was my favorite. I had special double layered gloves that went almost to my elbows so I never actually touched soil and my doctor gave me a special brace to support my back and belly along with special instructions but she was very pleased that I had found an activity to give me exercise, keep me moving and get some relief for the low back pain and braxton hicks. I really miss my garden.

Oh Becky, this was so emotional for me seeing you and your parents in the garden together brought a flood of emotions up. My dad was the gardener in our family and he passed over 16 years ago. Becky, even with weeds your garden looks pretty magical. It’s very lush, and has that “Secret Garden” feel. Your parents are so genuine. Their delight at digging up potatoes, carrots and onions was awesome. I’m glad you have that help. Your whole family is so supportive and it’s such a blessing to see. Thanks. Can’t wait to see how you preserve everything. Maybe you could pickle some of those small red onions whole or included them in some giardiniera.

Your parents are so great, they are just pleasurable people in every way. They are both kind, intelligent, humorous, and very loving people-it’s obvious where you and your sisters got those traits from. Amazing harvest as well, don’t beat yourself up that the weeds had a great time in the beds-you still won with the bounty you pulled out over the two days! Also, you did 100% better than I did since I didn’t end up doing anything more than herbs this year due to travel plans, so trust me when I say you have done great things in that garden.

A nugget for you ... when you are going out and have a second thought on wearing something, just bring it along (ie, the boots or tennis shoes, two knives instead of one, extra bags, extra clothing or jacket). I usually do potatoes in grow bags. At harvest, I literally dump each bag onto a wooden framed hardware cloth screen I made to sit over my wheelbarrow. And just sift through the soil for all the potatoes. When I'm done with 2-3 bags (and the wheelbarrow is nearly full) I amend all the soil and then refill the bags. Got it down to a science at this point.

I would NOT worry about harvesting potatoes in the rain. We grow lots of them in Scotland and harvest them in the rain….they just get muddy. They store them mud and all. Onions are stored in the dry separately to dry. I watched the chickens get all excited when you arrive and rush to the end of the coop to get close to you - so sweet.

Your parents are darling to come help in the garden. I'm looking forward to following your father's KZbin channel. I can certainly benefit with his posts

I love that your dad started his own channel! Both of your parents are so fun to watch. I’m getting up there in years and knew I wouldn’t be able to bend down like that for much longer so I put in vego garden beds. We did hugelkultur style in them so it wasn’t too expensive to fill. They are still breaking down but I think next years harvest will be GREAT and everything is at waist or knee level. 💕

Well Becky, I see where you get your energy from! Y'all did an amazing job on these beds! Can't wait to see what all you do with the veggies now! Joined your Dad's channel, I hope it does well! 🦋🌷🐝

That grass looks like Bermuda grass. It's really hard to get rid of it. If you put a thick layer of newsprint down, water it well, then a few layers of cardboard making sure to overlap it and close any gaps and water it well, then pile on compost and hay, you might be able to get rid of it. This is a very sweet video. I'm reading Ruth Stout now so I'm loving your experiment.

Becky have you ever thought of having an aloe plant? I have one and they grow so fast. They also look cute in a pot 🪴 besides the medicinal uses of course
