However, when it started to get cold I took out the window units and all of a sudden I found myself with a mold problem because of a lack of air circulation. Sometimes you don't know until you know! Watching this definitely made me feel better.

I think the freeze dryer problem stems from the fact it is located in the grow room. There is a ton of moisture in there, plus all the bacteria in the soil. You probably want to move the freeze dryer into the pantry room in the house.

Handy tip: when cleaning mould use the 3 bucket system. 1 bucket for the cleaning agent. The 2nd bucket for the initial rinsing of the cloth. And the 3rd bucket to rinse the cleaning cloth again before you dip it back into the 1st cleaning agent bucket. And throw away the cloths that were used to clean with. Do not wash them. You only end up spreading the mould spores to your washing machine. Also if you are using vinegar, add a few drops of Oil of Clove. It helps to stop the regrowth of mould spores.

@TamingTheWild12 Жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are doing in it. I was told by rep (because I thought same thing save machine and let it just air dry) but the defrost setting actually helps get the "stuff" out of the machine that can grow. Some people just air dry and wipe down but really needs to flush too! Light things like candy probably aren't too bad to just air dry and clean but things like meat, eggs & dairy should probably have defrost run to make sure its getting cleaned out well then cleaned again with vinegar or alcohol. Just sharing what I was told.

Becky, After having my FD for over 4 years now and having done anything you can think of doing in it and having to deal with a lot of explosions of milk and other sugary substances, I made it a habit to clean my FD every time after I do raw meat, eggs or fish in it using the soapy water and then rinsing it out with fresh water. Also, I bought the long flexible brush for the plastic draining tube and clean it every now and then as necessary. I opted not to use vinegar and pouring it down the drainage tube because eventually it will corrode the shut-off valve, and it is a pain to replace. Ask me how I know... If I use vinegar... on a very rear occasion... I immediately pour a lot of fresh water down that tube. Just a few tips from "being there, done that" prospective. You want to do some light wiping every time after the defrost cycle since some food pieces can drop to the bottom and then get some melted water on them... and you don't want any contamination in your food. I have a friend who now works as a tech rep for Harvest Right, he cleans his unit every single time after each use. I am glad you showed the disaster inside, because all of us have to deal with some "real life" gross cleaning. You took it like a champ! ❤

@@tinacarr9498 I wouldn't use vodka, I would use rubbing alcohol. I used diluted IPA (isopropyl alcohol) in the chemical engineering lab to clean and sanitize highly sensitive equipment inside. Mixing bleach with rubbing alcohol produces a highly toxic chemical.

Hi Becky, from what I've learned over the past 2 years, vinegar is NOT the preferred method for cleaning as it is acidic. Most people tend to use vodka or some type of high proof alcohol. Oh, I guess you do mention that afterwards. Also, some people buy a drain cleaning brush to help clean the drain hose. And it's definitely a good idea to wipe out your machine, especially when changing from something like raw eggs or meat to vegetables and fruit. Hope this helps! Happy freeze drying!

Becky, when baking you really need to preheat the oven to the full cooking temperature before putting into the oven. Then start your timer. I notice you do this when cooking dinners, which you really should also wait till it comes up to temperature. And don’t forget to lower the baking temperature by 25 degrees when using a glass pan, otherwise cakes and brownies will burn around the edges before cooking in the center.

Hello "neighbor". I'm just a bit north of you in Vancouver. I was trying to remember when it snowed last, and I felt like a goof when i realized you probably filmed this in early April. I love watching your channel. It's such a breath of fresh air. I love seeing all the work you and Josh put into your home and the quiet moments when you can hear Baby Acre in the background. Your channel is definitely one of my Zen/inspiration go to places. Thanks for sharing! Lots of Love to you and your family.

I tend to try vacuum sealing my food in individual servings. I use the roll so you can make any size bag and just do like a cup or 1/2 cup or whatever measurement I tend to use the most.

I always leave my freeze dryer door open when not in use and I've wondered if I actually needed to. Now I know! Thanks for sharing.

444 comments! Hi Becky! Once my kids and I realized your video didn't have audio, I started doing a voiceover for you, spoiler alert, you became Anna, and Elsa had created snow, but you saw Olaf trying to sunbathe. You are SO lucky! Our weather is SO weird, we had normal Spring showers and colder temps, then planes started leaving a ton of odd lines in the sky within minutes, and it all of a sudden got really bright, the temps became massively hot, fast, and we had weird massive dry lightning across the sky with so many strikes every second for hours and hours, no thunder. When it got close, there was perhaps one thunder every 8 minutes. It was like someone made a movie, but the sound artists didn't give nearly enough thunder, and not nearly enough. It feels like super hot summer temps here, but there's snow on the mountains. Super weird for sure. Stay safe and cozy in the snow, I will send you warm thoughts!! 😊❤❤

After you open a bag sealed with the food saver, just reseal it. Works great. Your soup looks delicious.😊

I really really wanted a freeze dryer but after doing some research I’m glad I never bought one. The negative reviews far outweighed the positive reviews. I’ll stick with my dehydrator and purchasing a few of the freeze dried items I like. But to each his own - I know some people love them. I’ve watched Becky for a few years now and have learned so much from her. She is an inspiration and I absolutely love her. ❤

I've also wanted one BAD, but I too have been scared about the reviews. A lot of people say the food can taste/smell like plastic. Ick. Becky's doesn't seem to have that issue and I've not really done much research yet because of the price! Yikes.

same. bought a super powerful dehydrator and just using that. I cannot justify the FD expense.

@@JanicePhillips - I’ve also read that Harvest Right has terrible customer service and that you’re pretty much on your own with repairs. Also read the HR freeze dryer components are cheaply made and not made in the USA. I invested in an Excalibur dehydrator a few years ago and although I realize there are some foods I will never dehydrate but would preserve if I had a freeze dryer I’m ok with that. Heidi on her “Rain Country” KZbin channel did a video on why she doesn’t own a freeze dryer. I completely agree with her. I love my dehydrator. ❤️😀

Yes they are a bit expensive. However, more companies are coming into market such as Stayfresh, Blue Alpine, and cube. There is a new start from Canada coming this year as well.

put some sticky tack under the corners of you new drawer organizers and press down to keep in place. Works like a charm

I would love to see you do a fruit kombucha from start to finish, that strawberry kombucha looked DELICIOUS! I enjoy your channel so much and I tell my husband about all of the things you do. He now refers to you as the Super Homesteader, " What did your Super Homesteader do today?" Haha, thanks for all you do on your channel, it is so entertaining.

You can only add fruit on the 2nd fermentation.
@theresebizabishaka7605 Жыл бұрын
You do the first ferment then add whatever you want to the second ferment when you bottle it. It can be fruit juice or fresh/frozen fruit. I used to cut fresh ginger into match sticks and add a few to each bottle with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a little bit of honey.
