I have a similar issue with ground elder, one small piece left behind and boom its back ten fold. My philosophy of gardening: take no prisoners when it comes to weeding, trimming, removing, pruning, and clearing. Some double-hammered brown mulch would have been a nice touch to the cleared soil areas (visually pleasing and an effective preventative to future weeds). This garden now has been given permission to flourish. The key will be regular upkeep. Easy-to-maintain urns placed here and there with colorful annuals would add a finishing touch. An awesome video.
