The first section of the Brinkworth line opened in 1879 from Kadina to Snowtown, branching off from the Balaklava-Moonta line. It was extended across the Condowie Plains to Brinkworth in 1894 where it joined the Hamley Bridge to Gladstone line.
I explore old railway lines among other things. Subscribe for more videos with visual storytelling vibes.
The Snowtown to Brinkworth section closed on 20 February 1990 followed by the rest of the line on 3 March 1993.
Brinkworth was a major railway junction built in 1892 at Magpie Creek, described as “the Great Junction of the Blyth, Snowtown, and Gladstone Railways”.
The railway’s history can be appreciated by walking the Peppertree Trail, a 2.4 km return walk along the old track, from the original stockyards to the junction where the lines diverged to Blyth or Snowtown.
The Pepper Tree Trail begins at the historic Stockyard Reserve and follows the railway reserve to the southern end of the town.
Let’s go exploring.
