Acrylic Painting Tutorial | Desert Painting Tutorial

In this art lesson, I give you the blending techniques I used for this desert painting. If you struggle with blending, this video will help. Also, I give you a step by step tutorial on how to paint this desert landscape scene and my best six blending painting tips I used while I painted this scene. Remember to be creative and use what you learn to paint your own original paintings.

Here are the basic steps to painting a desert scene
Step 1: Paint Layout or Composition
Step 2: Paint Sky (see blending tips below)
Step 3: Paint Middle Ground with Less Blending.
Step 4: Paint Foreground
Step 5: Paint in Details
Here are the blending tips when using acrylics
Tip #1 - Add a different color to each side of the brush. Those two colors will blend in the middle when you add them to your canvas.
Tip #2 - Create and blend colors on your canvas instead of trying to create the colors on your palette.
Tip #3 - Use a small brush and paint with small strokes with a gradient. This creates a soft texture as seen in the finished sky of This desert painting.
Tip #4 - Paint your colors you would like such as a gradient and then blend between colors using a fan brush.
Tip #5 - Blend side to side or up and down in large areas to create a very smooth look and transition between colors.
Tip #6 - Paint the texture you see with your brushstrokes. Example rocks have more texture than a smooth sky.

Thank you for this video! I went to that same area several years ago. I loved the colors of the rocks and always wanted to paint them. I was very stuck on how to create the abstract shaped rocks. I looked everywhere for help on how to create them and then this video popped up! Thank you!!

Finished painting is beautiful, however it's difficult for a novice to acheive with descriptions such as "paint smooth" or "paint edgy". Can we get in closer with the camera to see exactly how you lay down paint 'edgy' or 'smooth'? Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, this is one of the problems I faced as well with teaching while trying to paint plein -air. So a lot of my newer videos I'm inside and show closely what I'm doing. Smooth just meas more blending. Edgy is less blending.

Hello Ashley, watched several videos, I loved not only your painting expertises, teaching skills, but also your wonderful road trip, and your happy family!! Traveling through 50 states, and painting on the go, WOW! I travel a lot, and also enjoy acrylic painting (though I’m still learning). But I have never attempted to paint outdoor. Acrylic paint dries fast. I saw you had a lot of paint on the pallet. How do you keep them wetter? Do you use retarder or spray water?

Hi I love your tips and videos I recently started painting I've been wanting to ask an artist a question. I'm not sure how to ask it or explain myself. When I'm painting I always see what's Exactly painted, like how in some painting's have buildings or people that is not exactly painted as a building or person, but has the illusion of looking identical to that, how do I learn to see My painting of something when it's not Exactly painted what it's supposed to be?
